Star Trek Fans, Can You Help Me?!

I heard that Eric Fleming who played Mr!. Favor on "Rawhide" would have had the starring role in Star Trek if he hadn't died(Eric drowned in 1966 while filming a movie in Peru!. He was only 41)!. I looked all over the net and found only one reference to this which just said it's uncorroborated!. Does anybody know!? And what was the starring part!? I don't know much about Star Trek!.
