On July 17, 2008, ABC Family ordered an additional 13 episodes for season one!. One of the new episodes will air in September, while the remaining 12 will air in January of 2009!. With the additional 13 episodes, it brings the total number of episodes for season one to 23!.
Season 1 has a total of 23 episodes!. The first run of 10 ends September 2, 2008, but comes back in January 2009 with 13 new episodes!. This is said at the end of the promo for episode 9, Slice of Life!.

ABC Family has ordered an additional 13 episodes of the teen pregnancy drama by “7th Heaven” creator Brenda Hampton, it was announced at the TCA panel Thursday (July 17)!.
“We just launched ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’ a couple of weeks ago to our highest original series numbers ever!. We’re thrilled obviously,” says network president Paul Lee!. “This show has definitely hit the sweet spot of our Millennial audience!. So I couldn’t be more pleased to announce that we’re picking up 13 additional episodes of the series!.”
One of the new episodes will play this season, while the remaining 12 will get held for next year!.
The July 1 debut of the series — about a good girl (Shailene Woodley) who gets knocked up when she loses her virginity to the school stud — was the network’s most-watched original series premiere ever, bringing in 2!.8 million total viewers!.
The premiere also was the second-highest rated episode overall among ABC Family’s original series telecasts, only trailing the Seasone One finale of “Kyle XY,” which drew 2!.9 million total viewers!.
“Teenager” also co-stars former ’80s teen movie queen Molly Ringwald as the teen’s mother
