David Duchovny's public reason for leaving was that he no longer wanted the rigors of a television filming schedule!. he said he wanted to seek other creative opportunities!. He did return for nearly half of season eight and the very end of season nine!.
He made a few other movies after leaving the show and then returned to television, but a show with a much less rigorous schedule!.
I think that the reason he really left was he was trying to become a bigger star and thought that movies would do that for him!. They didn't, but the show he is on now is successful and he is very popular again!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
