Question: Why is a Soap opera have the 'opera' part in it if they don't sing!?
Answers:
“The term “soap opera” was coined by the American press in the 1930s to denote the extraordinarily popular genre of serialized domestic radio dramas, which, by 1940, represented some 90% of all commercially-sponsored daytime broadcast hours!. The “soap” in soap opera alluded to their sponsorship by manufacturers of household cleaning products; while “opera” suggested an ironic incongruity between the domestic narrative concerns of the daytime serial and the most elevated of dramatic forms!.”Www@Enter-QA@Com

As has been said, years ago when soap operas began on Radio, they were sponsored by soap companies (Proctor & Gamble, Rinso, etc!.), hence, the "Soap" and as for the opera part, I really wasn't sure why!. If I could vote, I would vote KT 's answer as the best because that link to Wikipedia certainly was informative!!!!! As to the second part of the question, of couse, some characters do sing on the "soaps"!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

When soaps started in the 1930's on radio they were condidered little dramas, entertainment like plays and opera already on the radio, so gosh darn many laundry soap companies started sponsoring the dramas because women started tuning in the radio while they worked around a house cleaning and the stories had stupid organ music for all of the daytime stories that the name soap opera was coined for the entertainment!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

They do sing, or have concerts on them all the time, especially the ABC ones!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
