Answers:
The same reason sitcoms exist!. To give everyone something to watch!. Some people like soaps, some like sitcoms, others like sports and do it yourself shows!. There is a whole variety of shows to watch on TV now days!.The possibilities are almost endless!. I also think back when soaps first came on televison most of the sponsers were laundry detergents and cleaning products because they were aimed at the housewife!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

A soap opera is an ongoing, episodic work of fiction, usually broadcast on television or radio!. Programs described as soap operas have existed as an entertainment long enough for audiences to recognize them simply by the term soap!. The name soap opera stems from the original dramatic serials broadcast on radio that had soap manufacturers such as Procter and Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, and Lever Brothers as the show's sponsors!.[1] These early radio serials were broadcast in weekday daytime slots when mostly housewives would be available to listen; thus the shows were aimed at and consumed by a predominantly female audience!.[1]

The term soap opera has at times been generally applied to any romantic serial,[1] but is also used to describe the more naturalistic, unglamorous evening, prime-time drama serials of the UK such as Coronation Street!.[2] What differentiates a soap from other television drama programs is the open-ended nature of the narrative, with stories spanning several episodes!. The defining feature that makes a program a soap opera is that it, according to Albert Moran, is "that form of television that works with a continuous open narrative!. Each episode ends with a promise that the storyline is to be continued in another episode"!.[3] Soap opera stories run concurrently, intersect, and lead into further developments!. An individual episode of a soap opera will generally switch between several different concurrent story threads that may at times interconnect and affect one another, or may run entirely independent of each other!. Each episode may feature some of the show's current storylines but not always all of them!. There is some rotation of both storylines and actors so any given storyline or actor will appear in some but usually not all of a week's worth of episodes!. Soap operas rarely "wrap things up" storywise, and generally avoid bringing all the current storylines to a conclusion at the same time!. When one storyline ends there are always several other story threads at differing stages of development!. Soap opera episodes typically end on some sort of cliffhanger!.

Evening soap operas sometimes differ from this general format and are more likely to feature the entire cast in each episode, and to represent all current storylines in each episode!. Additionally, evening soap operas and other serials that run for only part of the year tend to bring things to a dramatic end of season cliffhanger!.

In the USA, the phrase "soap opera" has also entered the language as a metaphor that can be applied to any narrative, either real or imagined, that appears to be excessively laced with emotion, and contains what appear to be unlikely dramatic twists: "Her life is one big soap opera!."Www@Enter-QA@Com

They're called "soap operas" because in their early days they were sponsored by soap companies such as Palmolive and Proctor and Gamble!. They were originally aired on the radio in the middle of the day for housewives/stay at home moms to have some entertainment while they were cleaning!. Even today, the commercials that air during soaps are for cleaning products, beauty products, feminine products, and baby products!.

They exist for the same reason anything else on tv does--for entertainment!. Some of them do tend to get a bit nasty, some even downright trashy, but some aren't really that bad!. They have adult content and adult themes because they are intended for adults/mature audience!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

They are called Soap Operas because soap companies like Proctor & Gamble (Guiding Light, Days of Our Lives, All My Children, Another World) aired them, originally on radio to appeal to women who could clean and listen to the radio at the same time!. If you notice, to this day, almost all the comercials in "soaps" are for household products and feature soccer moms in kahki pants cleaning or having their period!. (Sorry if this sounds sexist, but it's true)Www@Enter-QA@Com

It's escapist fantasy and it was never meant for kids; they air at times when most children are at school, and during the summer they used to at least make an attempt to tone it down and focus on teen characters more than the big nasty grownups!. They're still a lot cleaner than most of what's on primetime, including the so-called "family hour" between 8 and 9 when kids are a lot more likely to be home and tuned in!.

Why does anything exist!? Because someone somewhere thought it was a good idea, and enough people agreed for someone else to make a profit off of it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It is the entertanment factor that we all need in out lives!. Some people really enjoy watching sports, news, comedies, drama, thriller!. It's just another genre!.

The storylines can be so campy or far fetched!. It makes me appreciate my normal life just that much more!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Lol!. b4 they advertised yeast infection & VD medications during the commericals in the old days: soap companies like Johnson & Johnson or Tide were big sponsors for soap operas!. Now the sponsors have changed per se' !. Some people call them "daytime dramas" not "soap operas " anymore lol!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Because people keep on watching! Anyway the soap in soap opera is not about cleanliness of the topics, but their sponsors!. They were advertised by Lever, Proctor and Gamble, and Colgate-Palmolive when they came out!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

for entertainment and to make us be glad we don't have the same problems as they do!. If my life were like that, i probably would have been gone a long time agoWww@Enter-QA@Com

Simply entertainment, just like most Tv shows!. Even Everybody Loves Raymond has sexual references and adult themes!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

LOL!.!.!.that is so funny and so true!.
They do tend to get a bit nasty, but they are on just like the rest of the crap you see now a days!.
