How come Scully believes in God if she′s a scientist?!

Question: How come Scully believes in God if she′s a scientist!?
Although I am mad about the X-files I find a few flaws in its story!. Scully spends 4 seasons not believing anything that cannot be proven by science, then in season 5 she turns to religion for confort over the loss of her little daughter!.

How can this be!? Why does she not question God if it′s something that cannot be meterially proven!? How come this is fine, but it′s not fine believing that other creatures from outter space can be visiting earth, or any of the other "paranormal" phenomena shown so obviouly to her chapter after chapter!?

Please elavorate!

PS: also by the same token , how come Mulder, a man so obsessed by the paranormal, in season 5 suddenly refuses to believe ANYTHING!?

I don't get it!Www@Enter-QA@Com

The two are not mutually exclusive, as someone above me said!. Belief in God is not an exclusion of science!. You can believe that God created the laws of science and still be a scientist and a believer at once!. The two are very different: Science is the process of examining and validating hypotheses, reliant on evidence, and spiritual philosophy (be it theism or atheism) is the process of examining and validating humanity, reliant on faith!.

Science is not harmful to belief, nor is belief--properly applied--harmful to science!. When faith is relied upon to disprove clear, empirical evidence is where the two collide and get dangerous!.

In The X-Files, from your description, Scully would've turned to faith to validate her humanity--the aliens and UFOs and whatnot she were investigating would've had nothing to do with that search!. Similarly, Mulder doesn't turn to faith to validate his humanity, but validates it through whatever other process he does--and the UFO discoveries he believes so passionately in don't speak to the human condition, either!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Scully was always religious!. When she became seriously ill, her religion became even more important to her - as it does to most real people afraid of their own mortality!.

Science and belief in God are not mutually exclusive! You can choose believe that God created science as a method for all of his creations!. You don't really think that every doctor and scientist is an atheist, do you!? Some are and some aren't!.

Mulder stopped believing in everything for a while, after finding that everything he'd hoped for and trusted had turned out to be lies!. It was a temporary burn-out, which he got over!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

There are religious scientists out there but I agree that it is a little hypocritical!. However it's not at all uncommon for people to try and find God to help them get over a loss!. As you might imagine a test tube isn't exactly the most comforting thing in the world when you've had a close family member die!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Haven't you heard of the Baha'i Faith!?

The harmony between science and religion are supported by this independent religion!.

Some scientists have found that God is likely to exist!.

This is because of the discovery of General Relativity and Special Relativity!.

In theory, it may be more than likely that some "things" result in particles "going backward in time"!.

If this is a scientific law in the making, then God is likely to exist, because, to be a God to our long distant forefathers would have involved little more than fireworks!. And as Science will evolve, being a God to us for our progeny will soon be a like thing as fireworks was to our ansors (on the geologic scale of time ~ or the cosmic scale if we last that long)!.

Thus they will some day be able to act as Gods to us!.

In fact, they might be!. Sort of!.

Proof of this need not be more or less than a subtle idea, that though unlikely, does occur, today, rather than ten thousand years from now!.

Or a man who is shot 13 times, as I was once, but lives!. Or was shot again 11 more times, but lives!. Or was run over twice and once placed in a morgue for 45 minutes, but lives!. All as I've been!.

Faith is doing what can be done not because you know "God" personally!. Faith is doing what you can, when you are permitted, because you don't, and would really like to!.

I'm not so egotistical a creature that a "God" of the moment need be THE God, of forever!. Definitions change, and I'm sure will continue to do so!.

If I do something nice for you, such as invent a micro chip, or stand for the Indigents supported by the Salvation Army as I have done, then to some people I've been sort of God like, even if I do know the difference, does it matter if they do, as long as I'm good!?

I don't know!. I'm asking, a postulate; while denying the religious travesty such a thought might well represent!.

I suppose it might work for some in some situations!.

Or not, given each situation!.

When I was in that shelf in the morgue, it didn't take much to make me happy!. I was just glad he opened the box, instead of thinking he was hearing things again!.!.!.

And I've always thought that the Scully charactor was representative of a fairly compatable mind, with mine!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
