Are soap operas taking things too far in terms of portraying mental illness?!

Question: Are soap operas taking things too far in terms of portraying mental illness!?
I am not sure if anyone watched last nights episode of Eastenders, but Bianca and co were in Fargos restaurant for a meal, as was Staceys mum, Jean, at another table!. Jean hadnt been taking her medication for her bipolar disorder, and was behaving a little erratically!. Biancas daughter Tiffany, wandered over to Jeans table and made her feel very paranoid because she kept staring at Jean, who was very upset because her date didnt show!. She ended up shouting at the little girl, and Bianca marched up and had a go at her, calling her a "nutcase" and "she should be locked up and throw away the key"!. Even if it wasnt real life, I found it deeply offensive since I have looked after people with bipolar, and mental illness and it shouldnt be portrayed in this way, not even on a soap opera!. I even had to laugh at the storyline of Jake in Hollyoaks because the mental health hospital he was in was portrayed so unrealistically!. When are the BBC going to realise its not a great way to portray mentalWww@Enter-QA@Com

I was thinking that! I felt like pulling that little girls hair out,, what is bianaca thinking!?!? Everyone on the square knows Jean isn't very well even Bianca does, but she is such a ***** and has no consideration for anyone!. I know its only a programme but still, its putting a very offensive message across to viewers!. My best friend had bipolor and I had to handle her in a way that would stop her from lashing out, one day i had to call the ambulance cause things got that bad, but she is fine now and her bipolor is clearing!. Stacey handles her mum well, but i hate bianca and her bum of a family!

They wouldnt dare use racist launguage!! They would do a racist story line, but it wouldnt involve any launguage to offend different races, but they will call people nut cases etc!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The stories I've seen of mental illness were done well, and didn't seem to make fun of it!. Carly's (GH) mental breakdowns were all done in good taste, and usually they have doctors on set to point out details that would make it feel more realistic!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Sadly, being realistic about mental disorder isn't sensationalist enough for many tv producers, hence the extra drama!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I agree!. Soaps tend to show mentally ill characters acting in violent or extreme ways!. More story lines that dealt realistically with issues such as depression would be welcome!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i tend to agree but watching eastenders for to long can drive ya mental
its because the writers actually have no knowledge of the things they are writing about
to them its jus a pay check where as to the people who suffer from these inflictions it is very real and scarey palce to live
the tv has a tendincy to dumb down for there veiwers so everybody gets some sort of jist whats going on one hand tho at least they are tryin to get some sort of message across that there are people out there who have these problems and by makin staceys mum such a nice character who the audiance likes it may stop some of the ingnorance in the real word towards these people coz after all we are just all people just tryin to live weather we have a mental illness or not and if it can enlighten just one person i spose its job has been done good old eastendersWww@Enter-QA@Com

Sadly people in the real world have little understanding of mental illness so script writers are no different!.
I thought so far handled her story well although have covered over a lot of important issues and not explained it that well she is a really good actress and she has done her homeworker pity the writers did not!.
I have had several friends and also family but also worked with people like this and it is difficult so they should portray the real issues of coping and what help and support there is out there for them and family!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Be a bit boring if the PC brigade took over the script writing duties on soaps wouldn't it, this is not Soviet Russia trying to portray the "Perfect society"Www@Enter-QA@Com
