Army Buddy began with a cold open in which we see Hal's lack of intelligence!. He comes out of the bathroom and spots Jamie playing with a plastic bag!. He takes the bag away from Jamie and shows him how it can suffocate a person, but nearly suffocates himself when the bag gets stuck on him!.
The actual episode begins with Lois walking in from work and Hal having a foot bath prepared for her!. He nurtures her back to health and it has presumably become a daily routine that Lois uncomfortably works all day long, then comes home cranky and lets Hal pamper her for the evening!.
One day, the boys are playing basketball when Lois pulls into the driveway!. Malcolm accidentally missed a shot, and the ball backfired, hitting Lois!. Rather than getting angry, Lois did a great slam dunk and explained, "Orthodics," when the boys looked at her questioningly!.
We're now formally introduced to Abby, a friend of Reese's from when he was in the army!. Abby is his "best buddy" and Lois leaves the two of them to "catch up" by horseplaying with each other!. Meanwhile, Dewey begins to beg Malcolm for the $10 he borrowed, but never paid back!.
Hal is disappointed that Lois no longer needs him, because Lois feels better than she's felt in years, thanks to her new orthodics!. But when she runs, rather than agreeing to sex with Hal, he loses it!. First, he gives her orthodics to Jamie and tries to pin their disappearance on him, but Lois simply cleans them up and continues wearing them!. Next, Hal welds them into a slightly different shape, and Lois came home in even more pain!. Hal was glad that she needed him again, but eventually realized that he had to fix them because Lois had told him he was one of the few things in life she could still trust!. Unfortunately, Lois caught Hal, who told her his entire secret!. Lois comforted Hal and explained to him that she would be miserable again soon, which pleased Hal!. But she did promise to get herself another pair of orthodics!.
Meanwhile, Abby loves helping Lois out with every little task, but Reese begins to think she likes him as more than his "best buddy!." Because he's afraid, he literally hides in the closet!. Malcolm told him that he should take advantage of her wanting him, and Reese offers to give him his "gift!." The viewer is exposed to this immediately after discovering that Abby is gay when she offers to massage Lois and gets a bit too close!. Reese is heartbroken at first, but then overjoyed that they're still simply "buddies" after all!.
Malcolm repays Dewey with comic books and trash, and it turns out one one them is worth an undetermined sum of money!. Dewey begins ordering Malcolm around by paying him enormous sums of money!. Malcolm does it because his self-esteem is presumably low and he wants to know how much cash there is!. He wears a giant sombrero to school, turns himself into a human ice cream cone, offers to walk through the mall in goggles and flippers, and probably more that the viewer is unaware of!. Finally, Dewey says there's no money left, and Malcolm claims he's won, but Dewey said he still had his self-respect!.
