Question: Why is the very first episode of every tv series called the "pilot episode"!?
Answers:
A television pilot is a test episode of an intended television series!. It is an early step in the development of a television series, much like pilot lights or pilot studies serve as precursors to start of larger activityWww@Enter-QA@Com

I've heard it said that it's called a "pilot" because if it flies, it becomes a series!.

The pilot presented to the studio to try to get them to air the series is not always the first ep we see on tv!. Classic example is Star Trek!. The studio didn't like the pilot called The Cage (with Jeff Hunter as Captain Pike) that Gene Roddenberry gave them, so they revamped it into part of the William Shatner version in the two-part ep called The Menagerie which became episodes 11 and 12 in the first season!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Interesting question!

I looked it up and this is what I found on wikipedia:

i think its because they want to see how many people will watch it and if it is a good tv series!.
if nobody likes it, then there is no point showing a whole series!.
on bbc3, they showed about 6 pilot episodes of different shows to see what people will watch!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It's not in every single one but the pilot episode you see is what the creators send to a network and it "pilots" the series and leads what will be the plots of the show!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
