Answers:
Yes - I think it's the best so far this series!. Here is a copy of the review I wrote on Saturday night:-

There are few authors who can tap into the primal fears of the human psyche quite like the classic horror writer H!. P Lovecraft, but Steven Moffat is certainly one of them!. "Silence in the Library" was not only a typical Moffat story, but also had an obvious Lovecraftian feel to it!.

The slow build up of unease and discomfort, leading to moments of true primal fear, combined with the set up of a small group of people trapped in a situation where they could die horribly at any moment was typical of many of Lovecraft's terrifying "Cthulhu Mythos" stories, and was the basis of Moffat's latest offering for Doctor Who!.

The idea of the Vashta Nerada themselves is a truly terrifying one, which taps into our primal fear of the dark!. Who hasn't seen motes of dust in a sunbeam!? According to this story they are the Vashta Nerada and when shrouded in shadow and given half a chance, they will melt the flesh from your bones!. Will you sleep well after you turn off the lights tonight!? Personally I'm inclined to keep my bedside lamp switched on ;-)

In addition to them of course, we had the highly unsettling idea of faces of the dead appearing on data nodes, and the shock at the end when Donna's face appeared on one!. also the "suit creature", a human skeleton in a space suit, animated by Vashta Nerada (I can see kids in every playground in the country scaring the wits out of each other with that one)!. Then there was the idea of a gigantic library, where there should be thousands of people, being absolutely deserted!. A disturbing notion in itself, which reminded me of the almost deserted London of "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" with the 1st Doctor!. What happened to all those peope!? Did the Vashta Nerada get them!? Or did they suffer the same fate as Donna!?

The story also threw up a lot of questions, as the first of a two parter should!. First of all, who is the little girl and what is her connection to the library!? Who is the mysterious Doctor Moon who knows that her nightmares are real!? Is River song really a future companion of the Doctor, and what does she know about the future of the Doctor and Donna!? Is Donna really dead and if not, how will the Doctor get her out of this one!? No doubt they will all be answered next week in part two!.

There were certainly a lot of layers and threads to this story, and it could be considered confusing to some!. A confusion which was completely intended by Moffat in my view, with the confusion of the viewer building up an empathy with the confusion of the characters under threat!. A typical Lovecraftian plot device often used by Moffat, especially in the first of a two part story!. He also did something similar, very effectively in "The Empty Child"!.

Overall, I thought this was a fascinating and highly disturbing start to this two part story, and I can't wait for "Forest of the Dead" next week!.

If you do decide to sleep with the lights out tonight, make sure you count the shadows before you fall asleep, and don't have nightmares - they just might be real ;-)Www@Enter-QA@Com
