My gues is that Jeremy Bentham is the alias Locke used whenever he left the island for "Other" business, just like Ben always uses Dean Moriarty!.

I like Dan C's answer!. Seems to make sense!. It also explains why NOBODY was at the funeral, since anyone that may have known John Locke would have already thought he died in the plane crash!.

I think they all used the name Banthem because theyre lying about the whole time on the island, and told the public that "John Locke" was dead, so if they ever spoke about him they used the fake name
