So did last night's fiasco mark the end of Eurovision as we know it?!

Question: So did last night's fiasco mark the end of Eurovision as we know it!?
Even by blocking the voting in the semi-finals, it didn't stop the "new" European countries from ganging together once again!.
Even Sir Wogan has said he doesn't see any point in continuing as there is "little hope" of any Western State now winning!.
The problem is, if every country can award the same amount of points, then if you have 10 Eastern States awarding each other the highest points, no Western state can ever get enough points to win!.
Europe is too large and disperate for such a competition to be fair anymore!. It was designed for a smaller and more culturally connected Europe!. Western states have little in common culturally with countries like Armenia and Bosnia, so of course they are going to vote for their closest neighbours, not to mention that these new countries do not share the original founding spirit of the competition!. They may as well include Outer Mongolia as cultural ties are concerned!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It has been a fiasco for a long time now but last night did sink to new depths!.
The points that you make are very good and explains much of what is going wrong in "New Europe"!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

true, i agree with Sir Terry Wogan, it had become too political!.
but there again england will get their own back if it ever come to us and Sir Terry Wogan hosts it!.!.!.!.
you can practically predict who each country gives 8points,10 points and 12 points too!. and yesterday one of the Eurovision contestants said we are in it to win it or something like that, but isn't it supposed to be taking part and bringing Europe together etc!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I agree!. Me and my family even bet with chocolate which country would vote for wat country!. We got so many right, we used up all the chocolate!. It's the same people all the time who are in the top 10!. I knew we would be last with Poland!. I thort Germany would be in the bottom 5!.
Russia wasnt even that great!. Greece should hav won!. But LATVIA WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!####!!!!!

I lyked yur question!Www@Enter-QA@Com

This is the end, the original founding countries have started to leaf (Austria has decided not to take part anymore)!. Fine with me, lets have a Western Song contest and a Eastern Show and Dance contest!. I would watch both!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I have to admit i didnt watch it, but i just heard about the result today!. Coming joint last really wasnt fair!. Andy Abrahams wasn't that bad!.!. What i want to know, is why Rap maestro Timbaland wrote the song for the winning song by Russia!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

May as well cut straight to the voting as the songs obviously don't have no bearing on the outcome!. We should just not bother anymore!.!.if this is the only way these countries can win anything over the western countries!.!.then let them enjoy this small achievment!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i used to love watching the voting, but the last few years have been a joke, this last one was the worst!. andy didn't deserve that, it is time we pulled out, i hope terry wogan refuses to do another oneWww@Enter-QA@Com

Countries always vote for their friends and neighbours, so perhaps all entries should compete anonymously so know one knows who they are voting for!. Failing that it could be renamed the Eastern Block Song contest!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

the answer is simple, you only know the country a song belongs to at the end of the show!. You hear it vote for it then see who it belongs to!!Www@Enter-QA@Com

So cancel it or have Eurovision West and Eurovision East next year!. It wasn't just the Baltics at it, Denmark gave lotsa points to its Scandanavian mates so did Sweden!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

We send a cheesy entry we lose!.

We send a good entry we lose!.

Basically, Europe hates us, we might as well quit and stop funding this political handbag throwing contest!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The contest is well past its 'sell by date'Www@Enter-QA@Com

I certainly SHOULD do for countries in Western EuropeWww@Enter-QA@Com

Poor Terry is just about feed up with the whole thing!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I sure as heck hope so! Toothache and gout would've been more fun!

Alan L!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Last night was the worst political voting I have ever seen if we put Robbie Williams, Sting or even george Micheal we aint got a prayer!!
Well done Andy I thought he did us proud and handled everything with dignaty which is more than I can say for some knowing they where going to win before they even sang!!!
Pull out or stop them voting for their "Neighbours" OR have Wales and Scotland in with the vote too so we can at least get higher up lolWww@Enter-QA@Com

I have written to the prime minister about this!. (im not joking) suggesting that next year we enter a genuinely talented act (taking nothing away from abraham) like Muse or Radiohead and see if anyone has the cheek not to give us 10 points!.

If that still fails then i have offered to go on the following year and simply raise my right hand - mid digit extended - for a silent count of 10 before returning to my seat and waving my flag!.

EDIT - Mr Tel!.!.!. this is exactly the point though! !.!.!.it would disadvantage other countries if we were to win!.!.!.!?! whaaat!?
I was not aware that in international competition it was the balance of competition that we were seeking!?

Take for example World Cup qualifiers, surely its not fair to put the great international teams up against the likes of San Marino!? but still they play a near choice 11!.

Ergo - Eurovision is a farce where there is no drive to win from any country!. Thus, the only thing seperating the acts is their political background and this political hostitlity from the East is manifested in the voting!

If you're in it - you might as well win it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

My thoughts entirely!. The only thing that makes it entertaining is Sir Tels witty comments!.
How could Russia possibly win with that rubbish song anyway!? It sounded like he should have saved it for red square day with the tanks rolling behind him!.
It's a carve up obviously!.
Nice idea from Multojum above, but I'm afraid that wouldn't be allowed as it would apparently disadvantage the other countries who don't have big pop stars like us!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Let Sky pay for it - so those who insist that it's fun and worth watching can put their money where their mouth is!.
I'm sick of the BBC throwing millions of our license fee at it just so the eastern countries can have a taste-free camp jolly and laugh at us!.
Hit em where it hurts!. Withdraw funding from the big 4, and watch the winning countries descend into bankcruptcy!. That'll learn 'em!Www@Enter-QA@Com

It's a complete farce now and has lost its fun and entertainment value which we could always rely on every year!. I think they should have a lottery for the voting nations, with a select 12 or so doing the votes!. There could be two from UK and Ireland, two from scandanavia, two from the mediterranian nations, two from eastern europe, two from central europe, two from southern europe or something like that and they could be different every year!. As it is now it's a complete joke and we should have no further part in it and we certainly shouldn't be funding vast amounts into it any more!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The Writing was on the wall for Eurovision as far back as 1993 when the first set of the old Warsaw Pact contries started to join in, unfortunatley now, there are countires in Eurovision that have no place there, how does Isreal, Cyprus and some of the republics of Russia qualify, they certainley are not in what is the European area, just joined on by a previous empire status!. As for the block voting, well yes it will always happen if the General Public are allowed to vote unfortunatley, pre 2000 it used to be a speacilist team of music lovers who used to vote, which was a lot more impartial and fair, now the public get a chance to vote, which is ok, unfortunatley this means that current world polotics, language, area and styles will get more votes than actually the song!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The problem isn't bloc voting or 'East vs!. West' -- it's a total lack of European identity!.

There was a time when, for example, you'd have like Greek acts wearing costumes with some semblance of Greek tradition, and at least singing in their native language!. Now you have a Britney Spears clone act!.

Then -- ahem -- about the Latvian pirates! (Ah yes, remember those days of yore when pirates from Latvia roamed the seven seas in search of booty and adventure!. The famous 'Baltic-to-Tortuga' run, I believe it was called!.)

Oh, and did we mention Dustin the Turkey!?

The last good act I remember was Ukraine's Ruslana -- that performance had a nice kind of wild ethnic edge to it!.

As ridiculous as it sounds, the closest thing to an ethnic performance we got this year was Finland's Rammstein wannabees (right, let's preserve that priceless berserker heritage)!.

Look, the whole thing's a joke, because right now European popular culture is a joke!. There is no European culture!. It's all repackaged American culture!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

As a South African I find this little European fanny wobble every year funny!. Every year UK loses and for at least a week afterwards the papers are full of people saying things like "We should leave Eurovision and take our funding with us" "It's block voting, it's so unfair"!.
But every year all the West European countries do also seem to vote for "New" or "Eastern block" countries!.
I can only conclude two things!. One, losers always have an excuse!.
And in a fortnight where 75 000 people died in Burma from storms, 50 000 in China from the earthquake, and where thousands are being murdered by rebels in Africa every day, and 900 die in Sub Saharan Africa of AIDs every day, shouldnt you be ashamed that your bitching about a silly song contest that millions outside of Europe has never even heard about!?Www@Enter-QA@Com
