He was hit by a car by an unidentified driver and thought dead!. But it was another plot by Stefano who then brainwashed him and was going to use him to kill an adversary!. It was discovered he was alive, but had total memory loss of his previous life!. Meanwhile, Marlena - to get revenge - drugged Stefano into a coma like state and that's the last we saw of him!. And as it turned out the person Stefano was going to have John kill turned out to be John's mother and John turned out to be Stefano's half brother -- so that's why he has taken over the Dimera empire!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
So far, EJ shot and "killed" John !.!.!. they had the funeral and all!. Somehow, Stephano and Rolf managed to bring John back to life and were implanting specific information into his brain!. His job was to kill Sean Brady's sister, which turned out to be John's mother (a whole 'nother story)!. Anyway, John was found by EJ in Rolf's lab inside Stephano's mansion!. Stephano erased John's memory and placed it on a disc !.!.!. which Rolf found and hid in a safe!. The disc was found when Sami was telling John about his past with Marlena and Hope and how he was found !.!.!. etc!. They placed the disc in a computer but of course, the computer couldn't read the data and John placed it back in it's container to check it out later!. When Sami turned out the lights for the night, someone came in and stole the disc!. We don't know who that someone is yet!. So John has no memory of who he is !.!.!. all he knows is that he is a Dimera and Stephano and Victor have both taken advantage of him!.

Years ago Stefano reprogrammed John's brain and he developed total amnesia!. He saw a sign somewhere that was an advertisement and it had the name John Black on it!. So that's how he got his name!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
