The character had a line that said, "I needed to come back to see that it was okay to leave!. You need to fill my position!." - to Richard!. As she said on the show "I'm not back I'm just here for the surgery" and that's exactly it!. She wasn't back for good!. They showed an advertisement during a commercial break that said something along the lines of "Enjoyed seeing Addison on tonight's Grey's Anatomy!? Then tune in for new episodes of Private Practice!.!.!.!." And then it followed by showing previews of next season!.

i thought the same thing, i love greys anatomy, i love dr dreamy and i want him and merridth to get back together and izzy and george, but at the end she said she was catching a plane so maybe she was there for the new episode!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
