i know clarity and lost don't go hand in hand, but what the frig do polar bears have to do with the island and how do you think that one polar bear skeleton ended up in the desert!? i cannot figure it out!. everything else i'm fine with, i can accept the smoke monster 'smokey' as my gf calls it, jacob, everything, but polar bears!?!!?!!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

The polar bears are one of the easier questions to solve regarding Lost!.
I'm sure everyone remembers the polar bear encounters on the Island, and the bear cages Sawyer and Kate were kepts in at the beginning of season three!. Obviously, the original Dharma Initiative were doing psychological, and possibly physiological testing with the polar bears!. However, there is one other test that the Dharma Initiative likely did!.
To preface, remember that the original Dharma Initiative was eliminated by Ben and the Hostiles (now the Others) during the Purge (presumably) some time in the '80s!. At that point, the control of the Dharma Initiative switched hands, as did the direction of research!. Ben put less emphasis on animal studies, and more emphasis on finding out why women conceiving on the Island are dying!. It's a safe presumtion that during this purge, the Others released the polar bears from their cages and let them roam about the main Island!.
But where did the polar bears come from!? Remember in the final scene in the season two finale, the show cut to an unspecified snow-capped location with two fellows speaking portugese!. also take notice that when Ben's flash-forward began in the most recent episode, "The Shape of Things to Come" steam came from his body and he was wearing a heavy Jacket (Halliwax's jacket in fact, which is significant later on in the season) suggestive of Ben recently being in an extremely cold environment (possibly the Arctic)!.
Where we found Ben in last night's episode was (I believe) the Sahara desert in Tunisia!. also remember that in "Confirmed Dead" Charlotte visited an excavation site in Tunisia, finding the most out of place polar bear remains!.
That suggests two scenarios and both involve a theoretical portal that the Others use to travel throughout the world!. The first possibility is that a polar bear managed to unwittingly stumble upon one of the portals and was thrown to the Tunisian Sahara!.
A much more plausible scenario is that the original Dharma Initiative had developed the teleportation system that the show seems to be suggesting exists!. The polar bear found in Tunisia may very well have been a guinea pig used to test the portals they have throughout the world!. The bear was thrown to the Sahara desert where it obviously could not survive and lay dead, to be found later by an excavation team and later by Charlotte!.
