Yes, American Idol is based on popularity. I believe that's why Carly is still with us. And Catherine McPhee two years ago. She should never have beaten Daughtry - just as Carly should never have beaten Michael Johns. I happen to like Kristy - she is the most improved of all the singers - plus she is picking the best songs for her. But she is not popular with anyone, so go figure. David Archuletta is ina class by himself though. He is popular, and very talented. This will be pretty interesting next week. But I still believe the voters vote for likeability over talent.

The public can vote for who they think sings the best.

Popularity isn't a judge of TALENT, it's a judge of popularity. That's why Idol is a popularity contest, they're quite clearly, not judging talent! They should have rid themselves of that Irish hag!

YES. If it were a popularity contest, Justin Guarini would have won the first season, and I never would have watched it again. America chose correctly, at least then.

It's not who we like best, it's who entertains the best with the best voice. If it was a popularity contest Chris Daughtry would have never been sent home! People don't vote for who they don't like, but if they don't sing good I won't vote for them!

Technically people are suppoed to vote for the beat singer of the evening even if they don't like that person. But they are voting for who they like best from a personal standpoint whether they sing well that evening or not. Too bad. When I watch even if it is a person I like, if they don't sing well then I am not on their side that particular night.

I believe AI is a popularity contest that masquerades as a singing competition...

Simon already mentioned it. Once they have chosen the top 24, it begins to become a popularity contest and not a talent contest. That's what he mentioned when he was giving comments to David Cook.
