What theme/artist songs should the american idol contestant perform?!

Sometimes I get tired of the theme weeks because they always tend to favor one or two contestants while causing problems for the rest. I guess they do the theme weeks to try and put everyone on a level playing field (which backfires) and also to see if anyone is unique and brave enough to put their own twist on things...like David Cook has. I like 80s music and would like to see more current music, although I think they stay away from that because the songs are just too familiar to us.
They should just be allowed to sing whatever they want. The "theme" shows are getting tired. They pretty much butchered the Beatles, I'm not a huge Dolly Parton fan and tonight they're doing - inspirational songs (I'll be sitting tonight out).
Those are good, but also so predictable. They always do Luther, they always do Marvin, and they ALWAYS do Celine and Stevie. Plus, most of them can't handle doing a Celine song, it is out of their range. I would love to see a theme week that is completly out of the ordinary.
John Mayer, Ingrid Michaelson, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride--anyone with enough songs for the top 12! LOL! Seriously, though, there are tons of choices. You don't have to have gone platinum to have a theme on AI. Sometimes it's better when there are no themes, you know?
I am waiting patiently for them to announce a "JOURNEY" themed night.....That would be awesome.
I think they should sing something from today,like viewers choice. Wouldn't it be cool if the contestants picked five songs they liked each and the viewers got to go online and vote on who would sing what.
I don't know about theme.. but I can hear Jason singing American Pie.. and killing it.. or maybe Cat's in the Cradle.. or Alice's Restaurant. I just love how unique & pure his voice is..
none of that Power Diva Note crap that the others use to end every single song.
i think they should be able to sing whatever they want and sing modern songs so that people can see how they would be singing types of songs they would actually sing
