I've seen every episode of Seinfeld and can remember all of them locking their doors at one time or another.
Wouldn't that ruin the fun mood of the show? Who wants the ugly reality when watching escapism TV? =)
It would take up too much time to have them unlock two or three locks and remove the two door chains that most new yorkers have and then to lock it all up again after the visitor has entered and unlock to let them out. The show would lose about 5 minutes or more time for locking and unlocking process. Besides gotta show NY in a good light, after all it really isn't all that bad.... ..... .....

Perhaps its a mistake by the directors, or maybe since Seinfeld is from 10 - 15 years ago, people were more trusting of each other than there are nowadays.
