Why do the girls on American Idol always tap their fingers on the mic while sing!

It drives me crazy too! I was wondering if anyone else noticed that. I wish I could duct tape their hands together.

I first noticed Carrie Underwood doing it when she was on idol. It annoys me like crazy to see others do the same.
I've NEVER noticed that! I'm going to start looking for that, and I'll probably be driven crazy by it now lol.

I never noticed. I did notice David Cook doing it during Billie Jean, but I thought it was hot. I think anything he does is hot ;)
I am sure they do it as some way to keep up with the rythmn of the song. It is like "keeping the beat". It is just like someone tapping thier foot who plays an instrument. It isnt annoying to me. Musicians who especially play instruments along with sing or write music often do this second nature.
