Zach's ex girlfriend Hannah (Ethans Mom) had a nervous breakdown. She decided she wanted to take Kendall out and have Zach all to herself. She used a sniper to do so.
After Zach and Greenlee were rescued from the bombshelter, Aiden, kendall, Zach, Greenlee and Ryan were having a get-together at Greenlees's. Hannah (from the rooftop, across the street) took aim (laser point) at Kendall. Ryan noticed the red dot and jumped up to save Kendall. Bullet hit him in the head instead.
At first he seemed fine...about a week later he was having short term lapses...then the next week he woke up one morning and had no clue who Annie or Emma were. He had forgotten the last 4 years and still remembered being with and in love with Kendall.
And thats where we are.............

He was shot by Hannah Nicols (Zachs pyscho ex) and a few weeks later woke up with no memories of anything except being engaged to Kendall ,he thinks it is 2004.
Ryan was shot in the head by Zach's ex. He was protecting kendall from being shot.
Hannah, Zach's ex, was planning to shoot Kendall. Ryan saw the gun and jumped in front of Kendall. After recovering from taking the bullet to the side of the head, he suddenly didn't remember the last 4 years of his life. He thinks he's engaged to Kendall and loves her. This makes Annie and Greenlee furious. Annie is more hurt than anything. He needs professional help.
After Greenlee and Zach were saved from the bomb shelter. All six couples (Ryan and Annie, Kendall and Zach, and Greenlee and Aidan) were celebrating in Greenlee's apartment. Zach's ex had it out for Kendall and was aiming a sniper at her from the building across the street. Ryan saw the laser and jumped in front of Kendall taking the bullet right in the head. He survived and initially was totally fine. But he had some new lease on life and was acting a bit like a lunatic. A few days later he woke up and couldn't remember past four years ago when he was engaged to Kendall. The doctors couldn't find any physical damage and decided that it was pyshcological and he was repressing the past four years on his own. Why has yet to be discovered....
Hannah shot Ryan (she was aiming for Kendall) and it wiped out 4 years of his memory.
