A lot of it has to do with the references to pop culture, both current and from the 80s.
Because there are many references to other rather "stupid" subjects. Family Guy takes those subjects and makes them fit into the storyline in a rather amusing way.
The first few seasons were hilarious... But recent episodes, I don't know....

they use a lot of pop culture references to boost the comedic structure. They also make references to the many stupid things in this world that many of us can relate to. Plus the characters do some of the stupidest things imaginable. the show does use a lot of racism in which use stereotypes to encourage the character actions by race. They have cut aways in the episodes were a character recalls an experience that they have endured that some how seems to relate to whats happening at the time. It's no doubt a very popular show that airs on
