The Oprah "hoarders" show....?!

Question: Gosh how I hated this episode. how can anyone feel sorry for this LAZY woman who sees all this crap that she knows she's been hoarding yet cries like an idiot when it's shown to her. THEN to top this off, they completely redo her house with new furniture!! She has the money-she should redo her own damn house. I hate hate hate this show. How can anyone look at this woman with sorrow or compassion when all it boils down to is she's dirty and lazy and you don't care about anyone but you. I am appauled at Oprah and anyone who cried along with the stupid hoarder woman. Anyone agree because I'm sure there are plenty of people who feel sorry for her and will demean me in the process. I really don't care.

LOL - I thought I was the only one who thought she was disgraceful and should have been embarrassed to show her house... But - people will do anything for money (or a home redo and new furniture) and people will do anything to get on tv.

Personally I think that she made the clutter even worse to get on the show. Don't get me wrong, she probably had a hell of a mess on her hands to begin with, but she probably raided the flea markets and added to the mess just to get the OMG! reaction from Oprah and the producers.

A real hoarder would not have cried and acted like she "didn't know it was this bad!". I laughed my way through the whole show! Especially when they brought out the mouse eaten boxes of pasta! She needed a slap for that... For Real!

i disagree

It's not about being lazy. She has a mental condition that makes it impossible (without help) to throw anything away. She was also addicted to shopping.

I too must disagree! Hoarding is actually a clinical problem, a form of obsessive compulsive disorder. It is said to be the hardest form of ocd to treat! I have actually known obsessive neat freaks who over time became hoarders. It's true it's hard to believe someone can live that way, but they can't control this compulsion.
I am obsessive, not just in theory, clinically diagnosed with ocd and I can't stand even the smallest disorder, I don't see how these people can live like that, but I understand their disease and I feel for them!
Perhaps you should learn more about their disability before you offhandedly dismiss them.

Hang on there, calm down.
Let's not be so defensive, ok?
I have no wish to demean you, and I can see why it might be very hard to understand why Oprah did what she did.

If indeed the person in question (I did not personally see the show) was simply "lazy and dirty", you might have a point.
I am not sure why it is so upsetting to you, but you are entitled to your opinion.

I think I can explain this a bit.

True hoarding behavior is the result of mental illness, and is similar to (some researchers say the same as) OCD.
It is a compulsive behavior that these people simply can't help.
Like a lot of mental illnesses, this can seem so strange and illogical that we have a hard time sympathizing.
"Why doesn't she just throw that crap out?" we say to ourselves. Which would be the rational response. But, we are talking about an irrational behavior. And one that the people often KNOW is irrational, but can't keep themselves from doing.

That woman knows she is sick and probably cried because someone showed her sympathy.
You wouldn't be angry at Oprah for helping someone who suffered from some other, more familiar disease. So, even though this is not at easy to understand, don't be offended that she help THIS person - who is also suffering from a disease.

hoarding is a sickness, just like alcohol, I think you are more concerned about her getting all that new furniture and stuff....would you feel better if she had been a drug addict?

Lighten up. THis woman has a sickness. Don't be so quick to judge others.

i semi agree, because some ppl do have serious metal complusive behavor, someone in my family was born this way and she doesnt choose to be obess with every thing she does or touches. but than I do agree, she didnt really deserve that huge house make over, she had the money, she could have done it herself, why didnt they take that crew to neighborhoods and fix houses that have families with young kids, i want to say the ghetto but thats not really the right word. but places where they try to keep a nice house but its to far gone.

Its obvious this lady had a problem, its too bad you have no compassion for people, perfection must be hard.........................
