Catch me up...?!

Question: Hey! I just started to watch Lost this season. Can anyone catch me up on what's been happening on the island with the previous seasons? I get most of it, but some things, i don't get at all. And I know most of the people, but some, I don't. And with the 2nd to last episode, Ji Yeong (sp!) How did Jin die, or does nobody know yet??

Thanks, Happy Easter!!

It would help if I knew exactly what confused you, but I'll try. I'm just going to touch on mythology and long running things, rather than the minutia, because there is so much going on in Lost that it could be a 20 page paper if I got into detail.

First season we were introduced to the "Losties", like Sawyer, Jack, Kate, Charlie, Claire (http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Portal:Sur... ). Michael worked on building a raft to get his son, Walt, off of the island. Locke and Boone discovered a hatch in the ground and worked on opening it. Claire was told that she needed to raise her son herself, but was mysteriously kidnapped by "others" and escaped. We were introduced to Danielle, who had been living on the island for 16 years after everyone in her group went crazy and died. Ethan, who we thought was a survivor, turned out to be an "Other" and the one who kidnapped Claire. Claire ended up having a son, but at the same time she gave birth, Boone died.

There was lots of character exposition this season. We found out that Jack had been married but had issues and got divorced. We found out that Sawyer's father killed his mother and then committed suicide while sitting on Sawyer's bed with Sawyer underneath. We found out that Kate killed her stepfather/father for abusing her mother. Basically, if you want to know all of the character backstory (which is interesting and possibly important), I'd recommend clicking on the link above and reading the information. As it is not mythology and takes a long time/a lot of space to explain, I'm not going to get into it here.

The season finale had... Danielle stealing Claire's baby. The Losties getting him back The Losties blowing up the hatch and looking down a long tube down with a ladder. Michael, Walt, Jin, and Sawyer trying to leave on the raft, but getting accosted by others on a motorized boat. Sawyer was shot and Walt was kidnapped by the Others.

The second season started with split groups. The group that had been on the raft washed ashore and met a handful of survivors from the tail end of the plain. The "Tailies" didn't treat them all that well, but apparently it was because they had had a rougher time of it than the Losties had and they didn't trust anyone. They ended up joining up with the original Losties. The leader of the Tailies was Ana Lucia. Another Tailie was Libby who struck up a relationship with Hurley. Mr. Eko was a Nigerian drug runner who had become a priest. Bernard was Rose's (a Lostie) husband.

The other Losties went down into the hatch. Apparently it was a station owned by a group of researchers called the "DHARMA Initiative" (more information... http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/DHARMA_Ini... ). There are several of these stations scattered throughout the island. This one contains a computer (among other amenities such as a shower). This computer needed to have a group of numbers (the "cursed" numbers) entered into it during a small window of time. The man who had been doing this by himself for a number of years was Desmond. He joined with the group and the Losties took turns with him entering the numbers. Locke was particularly fanatical about it.

During the season Ana Lucia shot and killed Shannon accidentally. Also, the Losties discovered a man who called himself Henry Gale. They captured him and questioned him. It turns out that his name is Ben and he is an Other. He convinced Michael to help him escape. In the process Libby and Ana Lucia were killed. (That is why he felt incredibly guilty in the last episode.) Michael then led Sawyer, Kate, Jack and Hurley to the Others' camp, where they were captured. Michael and Walt were allowed to escape on a boat. Hurley was sent back to tell the Lostie camp what had happened.

Meanwhile, back at the group that wasn't captured, Locke was having a crisis of faith and decided that it wasn't worth entering the numbers anymore. He chose not to, which set of an electromagnetic pulse, somehow exploding and imploding the hatch/station. Mr. Eko ended up dying. Desmond ended up getting such a dose of electromagnetic energy that he's had time and space issues. Locke was mute for awhile, but communed with the island and is all better (well, maybe not entirely sane) now.

When the third season started, we discovered that the Others lived in a perfectly normal town, complete with electricity and contact with the outside world. (More information on the Others... http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/The_Others ) Ben is the leader of the Others. He asked Michael to bring the 4 to him so that he could release Hurley with the knowledge that his friends were captured, never to be released. Ben captured Jack because Ben had a spinal tumor which he wanted Jack to operate on. He captured Sawyer and Kate for other reasons (not fully explained), possibly as motivation for Jack. Sawyer and Kate ended up having sex in their cage, which Jack saw. He blackmailed Ben into letting Sawyer and Kate leave, while he stayed.

Sawyer and Kate went back to the group, with the goal of rescuing Jack. Jack stayed with the Others as more of an equal. He learned that Juliet, who was a doctor there, is a fertility specialist who was brought from the real world because any woman who becomes pregnant on the island dies. He also discovered that the Others have complete dossiers on every person who was on Oceanic flight 815 and that they have contact with the outside world.

Locke was a member of the rescue team, but instead of being part of it, he decided to blow up the submarine that the Others were using to keep in contact with the real world. Juliet came with Jack when he was rescued. Alex (Danielle's daughter, whom she hadn't seen in almost 16 years) came with them too. It was also discovered that Sun is pregnant with her husband, Jin's, child.

At the end of the season, a bunch of events occurred at once (as usual). A woman named Naomi parachuted down to the island and said that she could contact her boat to get them all rescued, except that her phone was being jammed. The Losties assumed that her boat belonged to Penny/Penelope, the daughter of Charles Widmore, and the love of Desmond's life, who was looking for him. Thus, they really wanted to contact the boat to get off of the island. The Losties had heard of an underwater station that was being used by the Others to jam communication with the outside, so they sent Charlie to disable it. He was caught and died, but not before sending a message to Desmond that it was "Not Penny's boat". Meanwhile, Ben and Locke didn't want Naomi to make contact with the outside world (for different reasons). Locke ended up shooting her (I think; it could have been a knife), while Ben kept trying to convince Jack not to use the phone. The season ended with them making contact with the boat.

You said that you're watching this season, so I won't summarize that. If you want to read in-depth reviews, I'd recommend checking out EW's site. If you want to read really in-depth recaps, there is always televisionwithoutpity. If you want short, funny recaps of the first season, Cleolinda's recaps are great.

And no one knows how Jin died or even if he died. One theory is that he died somehow between what we've seen and the rescue and the Oceanic Six held to their cover story that only 8 survived the crash. Thus, his death date was written as the crash date on the tombstone and we'll find out later how he died. The other theory is that Jin is still alive but somehow was left behind on the island. This was either involuntary (he was trapped somewhere and couldn't get to the rescue) or voluntary/coerced (possibly he had to stay behind to somehow ensure Sun's safety?). Again, the cover story of the Oceanic Six was that only 8 survived the crash and only six are currently alive, so they would list his death date as the date of the crash.

Based on Sun's emotions, I would think it was the first theory. Based on storytelling purposes (Jack seems to want to desperately get back to the island, so TPTB have to make us care about who is still left on the island), I would think that it is the second scenario. I'm sure we'll find out eventually!

I believe you can watch full episodes online at abc.com
