October 4, 2007 -- THIS hasn't been a good week for "Supernanny" Jo Frost.

Just days after one of her former charges allegedly burned his house down, producers of the British version of "Supernanny" now say they're often forced to make kiddies cry on Frost's popular reality show, which airs on Britain's Channel 4.

"They were told to force children to cry on 'Supernanny,' " Channel 4 board member Roger Graef said during a seminar at the London School of Economics.

"In some reality programs I have had producers come to me and say, 'I can't do this anymore.' "

But Channel 4 officials insist this has never happened on "Supernanny."

"In the three years of filming 'Supernanny,' we have seen absolutely no evidence to support these claims,"

Children 'are made to cry on Supernanny'

Makers of the reality show Supernanny are being told to make children cry on camera in an attempt to boost ratings, it has been claimed.

Producers on the Channel 4 programme, in which Jo Frost teaches parents how to discipline their children, are said to be concerned about what they sometimes have to do to make the show more compelling.

Supernanny is a hugely successful programme, with five million viewers regularly tuning in to watch the antics of the country’s worst behaved children.

It has turned Frost into a household name and encouraged millions of families to adopt the technique of the “naughty step”, in which children are made to sit on stairs until they calm down.

But Roger Graef, the award-winning film maker and a founder member of the Channel 4 board, has claimed that some children are being driven to tears by producers under pressure to win ratings.

“In some reality programmes I have had producers come to me and say, 'I can’t do this any more I have been told to change the ending to conform to the script',” he told an audience at the London School of Economics during a debate entitled TV On Trial.

“They were told to force children to cry on Supernanny. They were told to change things on Wife Swap and so on. The outcome is different then but there has to be some truth in it. If what you are producing is entertainment and you are using real people to do it then, the truth is, there is a long tradition of illusions. That is the reality behind it.”

Channel 4 insists that there is no evidence to support Mr Graef’s claims. “In the three years of filming Supernanny we have seen absolutely no evidence to support these claims and no members of the production team or the families featured have raised issues of this nature to Channel 4,” said a spokesman.

“Channel 4 takes these matters very seriously and have been assured by production company Ricochet that this has not and would not happen on Supernanny.

He blamed the fall in standards in the industry on ignorance, poor training and inexperience, saying it was not uncommon for producers and researchers to using the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia as their main source when checking facts.

It is not the first time that Supernanny has been criticised. Parent groups have taken issue with Miss Frost’s techniques to discipline children.

The National Family and Parenting Institute, a Government-supported family advice charity, said it was concerned that parents saw the naughty step as a “cure-all” when every child was different.

the only reason those kids cry is because someone is finally putting the in their place.

That is sick and sad.

I don't think that is true
