Why is there ONE token black person on all the reality shows on TV?!

Question: Big Brother had ONE black person this season, Project Runway, and now I just watched the first episode of Top Chef and again... ONE black person and she got voted off first. What the hell!!!

Honestly, the fact that there is (under most circumstances) one black person on t.v. shows is not because not enough black people are auditioning or trying it (as a lot of others have said) has to deal with ratings. Networks with a predominatley white audience will have more white people on their shows and vice versa for networks with a predominately black audience for their ability to relate to those that they see on t.v. Otherwise, the show wouldnt be popular.
But I find it quite disturbing that the only people discussing the "race card" are the people that seem to be the most close minded. I wonder if this is by choice or ignorance? This question was asked because of an obvious observation. The "race card" is not being pulled because we are not debating wheter or not the networks are racist. Hell, the same question can be asked (as it has been) about the appearance of white people on black networks such as BET.
Secondly, i really dont appreciate the comment about "if you want to see black people acting a fool" and needing to watch College Hill on BET instead of networks like Bravo because on ANY reality show wheter they are black, white, brown, or green those people are either actors or really screwed up. Prime example: The Real World? (seriously is that not people acting a fool?) The Hills? C'mon
Thirdly, i really do not like when people turn a question about race into something about pulling the race card. Next, I will hear you say that the three of four officers that beat Rodney King deserved to be aquitted.

If more would audition, there'd be more on.

She got voted off because she sucked as a chef, not because she was black. You ever stop to think that maybe not a lot of black people tried out for the show. Top Chef definitely has a few minorities on that aren't black. You should stop and think before you play the race card.

It's called "equal opportunity" But who cares, it's scripted bull-crap anyway. Hey, if you want to see black people act like fools in reality T.V. Just tune into College Hill on BET.

....I'm just sayin'

i noticed to, how ever.. i think its just a fluke thing. idk it seems like theres more to the story... but look at it this way.... BET has ALL black people on it. not one white.. lol can as a white person.. i like BET the best anyways

I really don't like it when people play the race card... Next thing you'll tell me OJ was innocent...

Before the television show is filmed, a group of idiots come together to discuss what will get them the best ratings. Apparently, they decided that more white people watch the show, and white people just want to see white people. Of course, this is all their simple minded opinions, but they are in charge of the show.

So, they gather a cast of white people, and then, they say, people will think we are racist if we don't have a black person! So, they get a token black person.

What you are seeing is a result of a group of people who are trying to play a game to see who will get the most viewers, instead of making a good television show or just getting the most qualified people on board.

I don't know but if you look at sitcoms its the same there is always that one black friend shows like one tree hill and i think small ville had black guy named Pete on there and has anybody notice that the black characters play ghetto NO OFFENSE

That is an interesting observation. As a huge Project Runway fan, I have to say she did deserve to get voted off. Did you see what she made for her final challenge? Horrific.

It ptobably has to do with ratings. Im sure the same amount of Blacks, Whites, Latinos and so one auditions for these kinda shows. The producers start pickin gout who they want and towards the end realize they dont have a person of a different race so they randomly pick one from the list of people. The one token person is probably there to try to pull in the black viewers, same if it were a token latin contestant or house guest. Come on this is America minorities never matter until it's voting time.

same on dancing on ice michael/zahraa

I think it is because they are smarter than that and don't bother applying for that crap!

I agree with you and yes I have notice it too, it has been that way with televison and movies for a long time. and whats funnier is. have you notice the cartoons lately? they to have only one black character. even in the animation that has a black character as a lead character like for example static shock cartoon, static is the black leading male figure. but he's the only one. so even in cartoons there arn't many if any black characters. don't believe me. check it out. naruto, pokemon, digimon, avatar. sponge bob? at lest the squirrel sounds black.

my friend said that its because they are required to have at least one black person so that they don't seem like they aren't giving an equal opportunity to everyone. Which is f*cked up because then you know that they are only using the minimum. I don't know if this is entirely true. It might not be true at all. But I also think they they should have more black people on reality television.

So what are you doing to change the status quo?
