Life on Mars?? ermm... i'm confused??!?!
Question: okay i've watched life on mars series 1 & 2 millons of times (i have the dvds) i know when he was in a coma 1973 was all in his head.. but im really confused.....in the very last episode how come when sam tyler commited suicide after he woke up he went back to 1973??? cuz he died so how could he??!!! help!!!! thanks... ;)

Why are you confused? He was obviously from the same era as Gene Hunt but just didn't know it. The future was a myth. (I think) OR Maybe he didn't die when he jumped off the roof and was still in a coma and never really came round and he didn't come back to the future. (OOOOh I think I am getting ahead of myself here). Well something like that anyway because he lasted 7 years in 1973.

My take on it was that DCI Frank Morgan was telling the truth. So Sam's life in 1973 was actually real and his life in 2006 was just a delusion.
Having seen the scenario in the follow-up "Ashes to Ashes", however, I'm not so sure I was right about that.

I think the idea is that "1973" was some sort of limbo. This is backed up by Ashes to Ashes, in which another character goes back to the 1980s and encounters the same characters. In Ashes to Ashes, the female character knows about Hunt and co because of Sam Tyler's files - this suggetss that Gene Hunt and Co don't exist in our world because otherwise they'd have been able to match up Sam's reports and police staff records.
So I'm guessing it is some sort of limbo - a place after death.
It's all in the mind.
