Intelligent TV shows?!

Question: I dont want to watch any reality shows, or stupid sitcoms.

I want something fresh, and intelligent.

Babylon 5, for example was great. It was a great story, great writing, great show.

Sex and the CIty and Gilmore GIrls were fast paced and witty, id consider those two intelligent as well.

Any recommendations?

For shows currently airing, I recommend the following:

Lost - this one is complex, and you do have to pay attention to the details (much like on B5). I'm sure you've heard the basics - a plane crashes on an island in the Pacific. The survivors discover that they're not alone, plus there's something unnatural on the island. Good plot arcs, and strongly character-driven.

Battlestar Galactica - again, you probably know the basics - Cylons attack, human race is practically wiped out, survivors try to escape to Earth. It's an extended metaphor for the war on terror, and in many ways the closest show to B5 around (and not just because of the setting). The politics and religious aspects are reminiscent of B5, and it leaves viewers with moral dilemmas. For example, when the humans settle and their new homeworld is occupied by Cylons who claim they just want to make peace, but on their terms, is it acceptable for the human rebels to hide weapons in a temple? And who is responsible when the Cylons destroy the temple, killing the civilians inside? The show can be messy and leave you wondering exactly who are the heroes and villains, or if it's even that simple.

Prison Break - not the most realistic show on TV, but a fast-paced and interesting storyline, complete with conspiracies, murder and plot twists at every turn. It's fun.

Heroes - normal people develop super powers. Some don't want them, others embrace them. They all have to somehow come to terms with them. A good serialized, character-driven show that's well-written overall. Some characters are drawn in shades of gray, while others end darker (or lighter) then when they started.

Dexter - Dexter is a serial killer. He was raised by a cop who trained him to channel his murderous urges - he only kills criminals who have eluded justice. He also works as a forensic analyst for the police, and his sister is a cop. He's a psychopath, and has to figure out how to emulate normal people, mimic the proper emotions, and keep both of his lives separate while avoiding getting caught. It's an ineteresting look inside the head of someone who is a murderer, and Dexter is oddly sympathetic. This is especially true when he gets involved investigating another serial killer, who creates a personal connection between the two of them.

Rome - Okay, it's over. Still, worth checking out on DVD. Plotting, backstabbing, conspiracies and more in ancient Rome.

Farscape - yeah, another one that's over. Still, a good sci-fi series.

right now there's not that many intelligent shows...they are all shallow and crappy. Grey's Anatomy can be a good show but my favorite show ever was Gilmore Girls.

Battlestar Galactica in my opinion is an extremely intelligent show. It tackles very tough issues out today. Its a very non sci-fi sci-fi show. Superb acting and writing throughout.

Battlestar Galactica, Torchwood, The Office. I just discovered Battlestar Galactica and have been devouring it. It is as fantastic as all the rave reviews say it is.

Frasier. It's primo, first-class on intelligent comedy.

The Office, House, Grey's Anatomy are all good intelligent recent shows. and Frasier is a great show, because its intelligent and hilarious at the same time.
