Is this cable take-over a nationwide thing, or only in select areas of the US?!

Question: I'm speaking of TVs no longer working with regular antennas, and everybody with cable needing to buy new converter boxes. Here, that is scheduled for Feb., '09...but I understand it already happened in northern CA (?)

Yes it is worldwide as far as I know, I am not sure of the exact details, but I think we have about 12 months.

from what I heard on the east coast, if you have cable you should be ok, you don't need to buy a new box

It's all across America.
You can buy adapters and such, but regular rabbit ears and the like won't work then.

You mis-heard and/or misunderstand. Has nothing to do with cable, only broadcast television.

If you have an OLDER television set, and watch BROADCAST television, you will need a converter box to pick up the new-style broadcast signal. If all you watch is cable (and I pity you if this is the case), you will not be affected at all.

same here in the mid-west, you will have to get cable or buy a special box for your tv............

It is a nationwide thing. I currently do not use cable/satellite and just have an antenna. After Feb 2009 I will have to use the converter box to get any reception.

There is a website that you can go to to get coupons to help defer the cost of the converter boxes that you will need to purchase.

Go to www.DTV2009.gov to apply for your rebate coupon. You are eligible for up to 2 per household!!

Since this is something that we basically dont have a choice on, I am glad that they are at least offering these coupons!

The digital signal only that takes over next year, applies to everyone, however it only applies to antenna and dish users, however cable users should now worry at all, your cable provider will take care of this problem and a converter box is not necessary, unless you want to watch any station above channel 99.
