Song selection on Americal Idol (Beatles)?!
Question: Okay I don't profess to be the greatest Beatles fan ever... but I wasn't too familiar with some of those songs. Why didn't they choose really familiar ones like Hey Jude-Hello, Goodbye- Help!- Lucy in the sky with diamonds- You've got to hide your love away and so on and so on?

The answer is simple but complex.
Simply stated not all Beatle songs are on the same catalog and therefore not all Beatle songs were available to the singer. I can almost guarantee you "Hey Jude" was top of the list not on the catalog.
There are actually three or four Beatles catalogs.
"Help" would have been an excellent choice. The problem there may be movie rights. It is tied to the movie "Help"
"Hello Goodbye" is not a good choice for a solo singer, too many harmonies.
And personally I wanted Amanda to sing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamond" She could have rocked that one out.
Anyway , the other reason for the pour song choice is the belief that you can not improve on a Beatle's song. They went for the simpler songs with the easier lyrics that no one could say they rally knew. It is a strategy.

They could have picked better songs, because they picked songs that are hard to emulate the originals on.
I knew all the songs - and they hurt my ears and my brain with the slaughter the did of those songs.
Basically, they killed the songs - it was bad. It was like a horrible accident I couldn't help but stare at.
