How real is the "Wire"?!

Question: I was looking at the wire last night, and came to the conclusion that Baltimore can't be really like this. They make it seem worst then Beirut. Is Baltimore that bad? Did they exagerate just a little bit?

This show is based on incidents that actually happened in Baltimore. Some of the characters on the show were former criminals who were involved in these activities. Not only that ,a majority of urban American neighborhoods are like what is seen in The wire.I don't think that it is exagerated at all.

I lived in Baltimore in the early 90's while attending chef school and, yes, it was that bad. You don't believe me? Go walk around West Baltimore (where a majority of the neighborhood scenes were filmed). I also live in Philly (moved here when I was 2 and lived here until I lived in Baltimore and then came back). I don't call Philly Killadelphia and I don't know anyone else who does.

I think it is that bad and then some of it could be exagerated a little. However, considering a lot of the producers and writers were people who worked for Baltimore Sun, old police officers, or criminals. I don't think they had to exagerate a lot. Plus, I don't think it's just Baltimore. Every city is probably like that. That's the thing about The Wire. They might be characters but there is a Bodie, Marlo, Omar, Kima everywhere.

i've been to baltimore and it is truly like that. it's sad to see how strung out people are. most urban cities are this way.

as for philly i call it killadelphia. i was born and raised in germantown and north philly and the drugs and murders are crazy. most of the people i grew up w/are on drugs or dead. and i've relocated and the murders have even made the news here and so do my friends who are also from philly not to mention it's been plastered on the daily news i know b/c i read the paper on the web.

The majority of the storylines are real. Don't be fooled that it's not real since it's not in the news. Even more so, if you read a few of David Simon's interviews, he says there are quite a few characters in the show that are based off of real people. I think if Manhattan was like this, Baltimore (amongst other similiar cities) would get the news coverage and funding that it deserves.
