What's the deal with "Lost" anyway?!

Question: I do not watch lost regularly but I know that some bunch of people had a plane accident and landed on an island. Okay. Just now I was roaming through the TV channels and then there was lost and suddenly they had computers and weapons and shower facilities and so on, what the heck. Can someone just give me a small summary with spoilers please about what is goin on from A-Z, so I can understand, when my friends are talking about this "Lost" thing. Much appreciated. Best will be gifted with 10 points. :)

Okay, I'm just going to touch on mythology and long running things, rather than the minutia, because there is so much going on in Lost that it could be a 20 page paper if I got into detail.

First season we were introduced to the "Losties", like Sawyer, Jack, Kate, Charlie, Claire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characters_... ). Michael worked on building a raft to get his son, Walt, off of the island. Locke and Boone discovered a hatch in the ground and worked on opening it. Claire was told that she needed to raise her son herself, but was mysteriously kidnapped by "others" and escaped. We were introduced to Danielle, who had been living on the island for 16 years after everyone in her group went crazy and died. Ethan, who we thought was a survivor, turned out to be an "Other" and the one who kidnapped Claire. Claire ended up having a son, but at the same time she gave birth, Boone died.

The season finale had... Danielle stealing Claire's baby. The Losties getting him back The Losties blowing up the hatch and looking down a long tube down with a ladder. Michael, Walt, Jin, and Sawyer trying to leave on the raft, but getting accosted by others on a motorized boat. Sawyer was shot and Walt was kidnapped by the Others.

The second season started with split groups. The group that had been on the raft washed ashore and met a handful of survivors from the tail end of the plain. The "Tailies" didn't treat them all that well, but apparently it was because they had had a rougher time of it than the Losties had and they didn't trust anyone. They ended up joining up with the original Losties. The leader of the Tailies was Ana Lucia. Another Tailie was Libby who struck up a relationship with Hurley. Mr. Eko was a Nigerian drug runner who had become a priest. Bernard was Rose's (a Lostie) husband.

The other Losties went down into the hatch. Apparently it was a station owned by a group of researchers called the "Dharma Initiative". There are several of these stations scattered throughout the island. This one contains a computer (among other amenities such as a shower). This computer needed to have a group of numbers (the "cursed" numbers) entered into it during a small window of time. The man who had been doing this by himself for a number of years was Desmond. He joined with the group and the Losties took turns with him entering the numbers. Locke was particularly fanatical about it.

During the season Ana Lucia shot and killed Shannon accidentally. Also, the Losties discovered a man who called himself Henry Gale. They captured him and questioned him. It turns out that his name is Ben and he is an Other. He convinced Michael to help him escape. In the process Libby and Ana Lucia were killed. Michael then led Sawyer, Kate, Jack and Hurley to the Others camp, where they were captured. Michael and Walt were allowed to escape on a boat. Hurley was sent back to tell the Lostie camp what had happened.

Meanwhile, back at the group that wasn't captured, Locke was having a crisis of faith and decided that it wasn't worth entering the numbers anymore. He chose not to, which set of an electromagnetic pulse, somehow exploding and imploding the hatch/station. Mr. Eko ended up dying. Desmond ended up getting such a dose of electromagnetic energy that he's had time and space issues. Locke was mute for awhile, but communed with the island and is all better (well, maybe not entirely sane) now.

When the third season started, we discovered that the Others lived in a perfectly normal town, complete with electricity and contact with the outside world. Ben is the leader of the Others. He asked Michael to bring the 4 to him so that he could release Hurley with the knowledge that his friends were captured, never to be released. Ben captured Jack because Ben had a spinal tumor which he wanted Jack to operate on. He captured Sawyer and Kate for other reasons (not fully explained), possibly as motivation for Jack. Sawyer and Kate ended up having sex in their cage, which Jack saw. He blackmailed Ben into letting Sawyer and Kate leave, while he stayed.

Sawyer and Kate went back to the group, with the goal of rescuing Jack. Jack stayed with the Others as more of an equal. He learned that Juliet, who was a doctor there, is a fertility specialist who was brought from the real world because any woman who becomes pregnant on the island dies. He also discovered that the Others have complete dossiers on every person who was on Oceanic flight 815.

Locke is part of the rescue team, but instead of being part of it, he decided to blow up the submarine that the Others were using to keep in contact with the real world. Juliet came with Jack when he was rescued. If I remember correctly, Alex (Danielle's daughter, whom she hadn't seen in almost 16 years) came with them too. It was also discovered that Sun is pregnant with her husband, Jin's, child.

At the end of the season, a bunch of events occurred at once (as usual). A woman named Naomi parachuted down to the island and said that she could contact her boat to get them all rescued, except that her phone was being jammed. The Losties assumed that her boat belonged to Penny/Penelope, the daughter of Charles Widmore, and the love of Desmond's life, who was looking for him. Thus, they really wanted to contact the boat to get off of the island. The Losties had heard of an underwater station that was being used by the Others to jam communication with the outside, so they sent Charlie to disable it. He was caught and died, but not before sending a message to Desmond that it was "Not Penny's boat". Meanwhile, Ben and Locke didn't want Naomi to make contact with the outside world (for different reasons). Locke ended up shooting her (I think; it could have been a knife), while Ben kept trying to convince Jack not to use the phone. The season ended with them making contact with the boat.

The fourth season started with Naomi getting a coded message off to the Freighter people just before she died. Frank (the helicopter pilot), Miles (a man who can communicate with the dead), Daniel (a physicist), and Charlotte (an archaeologist) came across on a helicopter to the island. Their helicopter had a rough incoming flight, so they landed separately. Meanwhile, Desmond passed on the message that it wasn't Penny's boat, so the Losties split into two groups. Locke's group (which included Desmond, Hurley, Claire, Ben, and Sawyer) assumed the incoming people were hostiles and thus was determined to stay on the island and chose to go to the barracks where the Others had lived. Jack's group (which included Kate, Juliet, Sayid, Sun, Jin, Bernard, and Rose) chose to believe that the freighter people were friendly and want to use them to get off of the island.

Locke's group stumbled upon Charlotte and took her prisoner. Jack's group came upon the other three. Sayid offered to get Charlotte back if that meant that he and Desmond could use the helicopter to fly to the ship. He got Charlotte back by trading her for Miles.

Locke has been questioning (torturing) Ben and Miles and has found out that Miles and his group have come from Charles (Penny's father) and they want something to do with Ben. Miles offered to Ben that if Ben gave him 3.2 million dollars, he'd lie to Charles and say that he couldn't find him. Ben has a contact on the freighter.

Sayid and Desmond went back on the helicopter, but it ran into a storm which caused complications for Desmond. Apparently people who have been exposed to electromagnetic forces (as Desmond was in the hatch incident) react badly on trips to and from the island. His mind was sent back and forth between 1996 and the present (which on island time is 2004). That's a big plot point, so I'd recommend watching "The Constant" if you at all can.

Daniel discovered that time moved differently on the island, so he was able to talk Desmond back. Shortly after, he and Charlotte disappeared. Juliet, Jack, and Kate went after them. Kate was knocked out. Juliet was told by a cohort of Ben's which station the two were headed towards and that she should kill them. She found out that they were actually on the good side, and were neutralizing the chemical weapon at the station, instead of releasing it, so she didn't kill them.

Other twists have been revealed in "flash-forwards" this season. Some of the people on the island apparently make it off and are seen in the future. Kate ends up beating her murder rap, and somehow ends up with Claire's son, Aaron, as hers. Hurley announces that he is one of the "Oceanic 6" (apparently only six of the original survivors get off of the island; Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, and possibly Aaron are the ones revealed so far) and ends up back in the mental institution he was in before arriving on the island. Sayid apparently is working for Ben, killing people on a list. Jack is fine for awhile and then starts to deteriorate, insisting that the people who got off of the island need to go back.

I think I covered most of the main points. There are more character development things from flashbacks, but I figured the major events were more important for following the show. I also got more in-depth with the most recent season, because that is the most crucial at the moment. (If they go back to the smoke monster and other early things, sorry.)

If you want to read in-depth reviews, I'd recommend checking out EW's site. If you want to read really in-depth recaps, there is always televisionwithoutpity.

There wouldn't be a short summary....It is quite an involved TV show.....

There was a group of people on the island before them. They were known as the Dharma Initiative and they were there doing experiments and other things. There are houses and bunkers on the island where the Dharma Initiative people worked and lived. The people from the plane crash don't come across this stuff until the 2nd and 3rd seasons.

I would love to answer this question, but they don't give us enough space to summerize that show. My best suggestion would be to go to TVGuide.com. They have a great episode summery there.

There is no way to give you a short summary of this show. It is really a great show but you have to see if from the begining to understand what is going on ,on the island.

Another thing you need to know if you want to start watching it is that they flash back and forth a lot to things that happened before they crashed and things that happen after they get off the island. There also seems to be some kind of time warp thing going on. I have just started watching it this season, it's fairly easy to start catching on. I'm sure if you go to the network website there's probably some info on there that will help you get caught up also. Pretty good show, it's worth the effort.

There is no way I can explain all that to you. I suggest you start watching from the very first episode, if not you're going to be the one who's lost. Here are some Lost sites:

10 points or no, there's no simple answer to that question. That show has more twists and turns than Carter has little liver pills. The only way for you to learn about what is going on is a) be involved from the beginning or b) catch up. Here is a website that will point you in the right direction. Look up past episodes, and start at the beginning.

Unfortunately, one cannot be a casual watcher of LOST. You have have to watch it religiously or you won't get it and be highly confused like I assume you are. There are a number of sites you can turn to for help. But by even explaining whats going on won't help becuase alot of the clues to the show are visual. Books the characters are reading, pictures in the backgrounds, songs that are play, small bit characters or extras that might not have meaning or lines in one episode may be big players in the next. My best advice would be to rent the first 3 seasons! EW.com also has a pretty synopsis site too. Good Luck!!

Agreed it is hard to sum up but ill try...a few weeks after the crash they discovered their are other ppl on the island
(the others) they are led by a man named Ben they live in houses with running water electric food and everything else some of the survivors of the crash (jack kate sawyer ) were takin hostage by the others and escaped and now they have taken Ben hostage so they now have control over the houses and everything else the others had...also a team of 4 ppl showed up on the island not sure why yet except that their after Ben and willing to save the plane crash ppl jack kate syide aaron and hugo are all save at home now off the island their is 1 more survivor but not sure who till next week Ben also escaped the island and for some reason still unknow kate is raising aaron and pretending he is her baby they are also pretending that only 8 ppl survived the crash...hope that helped i know its confusing but i watch the show and im still confused so if youreally want to figure it out you can watch all the episodes here http://tvliveshows.com
