Question: When Family Guy first aired I was appalled and felt this only added to the 'dumbing down of America' and all the delinquent youth. However, I've watched a couple rerun episode and love this show. It is so hilarious.

Is tv desensitizing us?

<<AS a True TV fan I think that we are being desenitzed by what we see on TV,,,What use to shock me when something was said or done ? Now its like no big deal which is sad because it has made me question my morals,,

I think it might be movies too. How I think this well way back in the past the saw movies never would have been made but now these days where violance blood gory crap is pretty commen in tv and movies so many people are watching those movies without feeling scared to watch them.

Maybe to a degree, but for me, it's only in terms of the TV, not real life. If someone said something to me like they say in "Family Guy", I would be stunned, even though I find the show funny. "The Office" makes me cringe because I would quit if I had a boss like that, and I think that if I really did, I would be looking for a new job. In terms of violence, same thing -- if I was actually witnessing violence first hand, I would be terrified and disgusted, whereas seeing it on TV doesn't bother me. For TV and movies, it's entertainment, but I know that if I actually saw something like that in real life, I would be able to differentiate between reality and fantasy. Like 9/11 -- I don't think many people saw the plane crash into the tower and didn't care, no matter how many plane crashes they've seen on TV; it was much too real to ignore.

Yes and no. Yes, tv has made certain things seem acceptable and commonplace to us, things that shouldn't be treated as forms of entertainment, such as the current trend of 'torture porn' that is being put out by Hollywood. However, on the same note, television has also made it easier to bring some ideas to the mainstream audience, things that were deemed too taboo for discussion, and we are now able to openly acknowledge and discuss them instead of trying to pretend that they don't exist.
