Would you like to see a "vote against" feature for American Idol next !

Question: Every contestant gets a "vote for" phone number, I propose that they each get a "vote against" number as well. Each "vote for" counts as (+1) and each "vote against" counts as (-1) and you add the two for an aggregate score to determine who is eliminated.

Thoughts?

I would actually rather see them post the actual number of votes that supposedly were cast for each contestant. By not divulging the actual numbers, the whole process becomes suspicious. I still have my doubts that any votes actually count and any decisions are made purely for ratings purposes.

No. That'd just be mean. Pick one you like and vote for them. By not voting for the others, you will have made your point that you don't like them.

Actually I think it's an amazing idea, not just for American Idol for any other reality show eg. so u think u can dance etc.
This way the judges get a clear chance of who the audience really hates. Because when the results of the voting comes out in any show u just know who got the highest scores but u never get a chance of knowing who everybody else hates.
So i guess it's an amzing idea.
just convince someone to put it into reality

Too complicated. The simple theory is any vote for your favorite IS a vote against for everyone else.

I think that is a fantastic idea. I had proposed in the past that they have one night where you can vote against someone instead of for a person, but I like your plan better. Last year Sanjaya would have never even made the top 12.

In the end, it is the top rated show on television so they probably won't tinker with it till the ratings drop.

That's not a bad idea, but what if they got into the negatives then they might feel really bad about themselves.

I hate to say it, but frogbutt is right, every vote For someone is a vote Against someone else. if you and frogbutt were the contestants, and I voted for you only then frogbut would not get my one vote and therefore would not win. whoever get the least amount of votes win. so you are just repeating what is already being done, just in a different and yes more complicated way because now they have to tally two sets of votes for each person instead of just talling votes for each person. re do the math.. litterally, put two dolls on the table. place 10 votes for one, and 9 votes for the other and 5 non votes for one and 6 non votes for the other how many votes in total? now do remove the non votes for each. the one with the 10 positive votes would win either way right. simple vote for your favorite and whoever does not recieve votes or get less votes is obviously not the favorite and is sent home. I hope that helps you to understand frogbutts view point. a better way would be for the judges to choose who is the bottom three and let american chose who in the bottom three goes home after the judges select the bottom three. that is how they do it with "so you think you can dance." which is run by nigel lithgrow of american idol.

It's a great idea, it's honest and gets rid of the "sympathy baggage" on the show....but I'm not saying no names ;-)
