I don't think he would do well with any of the big mysteries, such as where Osama is, but I think he would be able to solve smaller ones. Holmes' fortes were observation and deduction. He could see all of the little things that were often overlooked and he could make conclusions from those observations. With the big mysteries, there is not that much for him to observe and discover, so I don't think he'd be that much of a help.

His successors now seem to be Shawn from Psych (who is super observant and solves crimes using it, albeit in a humorous manner) and House from House (who even has the drug addiction). I could see a modern-day version of Holmes in similar roles, either as an adjunct to the police (not in the force itself, as he doesn't seem the type) or as a diagnostician. I don't see him as a global problem-solver, though.

he would be in jail on drug possession charges, but he could help out on some of these serial killings or murders
