They magically have electricity running somewhere underground but dont ask me how they charge that - its ludicrous.
Maybe the cell phones dont get any reception out on the island...or their batteries all died.

ya but they probabley ran out of battery after that long and remember they have a signal block on the island that's why the french ladies message never got heard. even if they did ben wouldn't let them and lock wouldn't let them to.
You think you are so smart huh? Well the cells can't get a signal....they are so far from civilization there are no towers to produce the carriers signals.
well first the plane crashed so i could imagine stuff was either lost or seriously damaged. second they couldnt get any transmissions anyway because of one of the stations had block or something like that. you have to follow the show and watch EVERY episode to really know whats going on for the most part. also, they have been on the island for like 2 months in tv time so i would imagine the phones would be dead

Which season of Lost are you watching right now? 1-2? Do you know 'the others' blocked the signal that coming from people using their underwater station....and if I'm wrong about that I must say that maybe you're right, they can tell someone they are on the island...umm, what is the latitude or longitude of the island by the way?
The hydra station was jamming that tower. After about 2 months of not paying cell phone bills, maybe service would be cut off. Not to mention the phones might need to be charged up and the service providers were probably informed that every one of the losties were deceased. That tower was old technology. Not meant for cell phones, but for broadcasting radio transmisssions. I'm not sure if that tower can even transmit cell calls. If I remember correctly, I think early in the series, maybe the pilot, they showed certain individuals trying to use their cell phones unsuccessfully.
The tower on the island is a radio tower. That's completely different from a cell phone tower. And even if it was a cell phone tower, it needs to be able to connect to another tower to send messages off the island. If it was a cell phone tower they could call each other, but not anyone off the island because there's no way to get the signal to a tower on the mainland (unless they had a satellite uplink and their own satellite).
