because the acotrs and actresses got tired of being themselves
they ended the show after 7 seasons, and the person who created GG, Amy Sherman Palladino, stepped away after the 6th season...
The actresses who played Lorelie and Rory felt the shows weren't as good without the original writers and they didn't want to renew their contracts because they were sick of working the long hours. I really miss the show though, it was excellent. I hope the original writers come up with some new shows for us!

Last year was the series finale, the actresses chose to not renew their contracts. They wanted to move on to other things before the show got old & while it was still on top.
Alexis Bledel refused to sign for another season, mostly due to $$ and schedule issues. Lauren Graham did not want to continue without her. No leading ladies, no show. Also the 7th season's low ratings were not helpful.
Well, it all started at the end of season 6. Amy Sherman Palladino, the creator of the show, and the producer, wanted two more definite seasons from the network at the time. However, they would not guarantee those seasons, so she walked away. Season 7 was met with must opposition from fans who were mad about the whole Luke/Chris thing. The ratings didn't prove to be that strong. Mainly Alexis was tired of the long hours because it didn't allow her to do the movie roles that she wanted to accomplish. Alexis didn't really want to sign on for another season, and Lauren Graham wouldn't sign on with Alexis. There was talks of a half season, and also of a season following Lorelai and Luke, but Alexis didn't want to do it. So, if the network would have listened to Amy when she asked for the seasons, Gilmore Girls would still be on right now.
