I looked it up on line and the old 1985 BBC series had two narrators. I know you were looking for the person who told the stories but I could find nothing like that. What I did find was the person who told the stories of Thomas, and there were two of them in the original series.
The first one was Ringo Starr who did 13 episodes from 1984 until 1986.
The second one was Michael Angelis who did 25 episodes from 1991 til 1995.
