Basically, what happened in the episode is that we figured out what exactly happened to Desmond after he turned the failsafe key. He was exposed to high levels of electromagenitic radiation which resulted in his ability to transfer his consciousness back and forth through time. And Des and Penny finally made contact, which I think is the best thing to happen on Lost so far (forget Skate or Jate, it's all about Desnny!)!

So to recap some of the answer we got from "The Constant:"

We found out why the sky turned purple when Desmond turned the failsafe key.

Well, we know that Penny isn't married (she was wearing a ring, but it was on her right hand... unless it's different in London? nah!)

We found out what happened to Minkowski and why no one wants Daniel Faraday talking to him. To elaborate, I think it's implied that the freighter has been on the Island at least long enough to have experience the purple light that overtook the sky when Desmond turned the failsafe key, and why Minkowski is suffering from the same "side effects" ad Des.

It's implied why Daniel Faraday was crying when he saw the newscast of "Oceanic flight 815" being found in the Sunda Trench. We found out that Daniel Faraday is probably a time traveller type person like Des (and we found out why Charlotte asked him which card he "remembered" when they were doing that card exercise in one of the previous episodes).

There are also implications that Charles Widmore, Penny's father and CEO of Maxwell Industries probably funded the freighter mission. [I also have a theory that the woman in Sayid's flash forward in "The Economist" was working for Charles Widmore]

We should now all know who Ben's "man of the boat" is (I won't say it in case some people don't know yet but I will say to look at the opening credits for a clue!).

This show is like a old time cliff hanger! They make more mysteries each time they solve one. It is just like the old Flash Gordon shows and you would see them fall off a cliff and the next episode they would be saved by a giant bird catching them. They have just modernized it. Trust me just keep watching.

Well, when the hatch imploded in Season 3, Desmond was subject to a lot of radiation and electromagnetism. When Desmond starting having these time warp trips, Dan asked him if he was subjected to radiation or electromagnetism recently. Desmond would literally flash back to 1996, and then flash forward, but it was like anything from 1996 on never happened, so everyone in the future (on the freighter) thought he had amnesia. To get rid of the time warps, Desmond had to find someone or something that was present in both the past and the future, which was Penny. When Desmond saw Penny in the past and got her number, he called her in the future, and his warps stopped. Dan Faraday was interested in this back in 1996 and was experimenting on it, so Desmond found him when he was in the past and Dan helped him put the correct numbers into a radiation thing to get his rat to stop having time-warps like Desmond. Faraday is known to have a lack of memory, so he writes a lot of things down, so in the case that Faraday ever started time warping, he would have to find Desmond and he would be his "constant" from both times as Penny was Desmond's "constant". I don't think there were any really vital questions answered. I mean, we found out who Minkowski was: the communications officer on the freighter who had the same time-warp troubles as Desmond only he couldn't find a constant and he died. That was basically the only question answered. I hope I helped you!

Wow, i think Phil has your answer there. He really has paid attention and i could not answer it better, even in some of the little details like Widmore connections, the faraday crying scene and of course the name back on the credits!

Everything he said!

I too think the desmond and penny theme is better than any other love story and the jack, kate, sawyer triangle is hopeless and boring. Pen & des is almost a greek tragedy -- brilliant.
