Hmmm that's a tough one. I'm usually good at old shows. (I'm in my 40's) Are you sure it was on in the 80's?
This is the only show I can come up with that has a boy and a flying robot, but it was on prior to the 1980's.

I found this for ya! You're right! Zak is the key word. But it was Zax rather than Zak. I'd forgotten all about that one! I know Benji was really popular back then.
