If they think they're good enough to get on American Idol...even pass the auditions to get on....let them sing their own song, with all the stage-acting they want!
But, have it come down to a glorified 'karoke? No way!
There isn't an actor, that makes that good a stage act, mimicking another's words....that can make it on their own....

I think in the beginning they should sing peoples songs already created
but then when it get to Top 5 they should have to make there own songs to get a feeling of becoming an artist.
No I don't, what would we have to compare them too? Simon would be out of a job because he couldn't compare that "dreadfully awful" cover to someone else's original.
So who is going to write all those original songs and what would guarantee the quality? It is a contest for singers, not composers.
No..they should do covers but they should put some pizzazz to it...so they don't sound like a cruise singer...
The women in this season are so unbelievably smoking hot. Although opera girl is on right now and she isn't getting it done at all.

....and they aren't going to take the time for all these "amazing singers" to come up with another talent. i. e. writing....ya know...not everyone can be as Godlike as you.(with the exception of me that is)
If they are as talented as Colbie Caillat of course they all should! If that's the case then they should include a new criteria for the idol search next year...All applicants must be able compose their own songs. Must have a passion for both singing and songwriting. That's such a brilliant idea!

that's a nice idea, but i think it would make the competition a lot tougher. i mean, composing a song cant be done as easily as in a week, and if ever it can be done, it would put too much pressure on the contestants because rehearsing for a song to perfect it is hard enough, let alone compose at the same time too. and also, just because someone can compose well, it doesnt mean that he has a great voice to back it up, and vice versa. so in that way, you wont really find what your looking for because you are combining both singing and composing into a singing competition
