His mother was chopped into pieces in front of his eyes. He sat in a storage container, in a pool of dried blood 2 inches thick, for two whole days. This was his Traumatic Event. It caused him to become the sociopath that he is.
Nothing "happened" to him....he is a sociopath. Void of human emotions.
SPOILER ALERT: season One
On the series, Dexter discovers that he was a witness to his mothers murder (ala chainsaw) in a shipping containerwhen he was 3 years old. He spent 2 days locked in with his mother and three other dead women, sitting in a layer of their blood. He also discovers that he had a brother who was in there with him. That is a focus for the end of season one, I would hate to ruin it for anyone! In the books he speaks of a dark passenger, which in the 3rd book seems to be an ancient entity, or part of one, that speaks to him from somewhere inside his psyche. Does that help?
