American idol.......?!

Question: how many auditions do people go through to actually get on american idol, and like, where do they stay?do they pay rent if they stay at some american idol hotel?'bout how much would it cost to do everything to get on american idol?
i have no clue what goes on on it. just wondering.

They do only one audition, then on the next Hollywood round they perform 3 times( the first round is whether you passed you will go to the 3rd round but if you do not make it you'll have a second chance which is the round 2 but if you fail it you're out. The bills on the hotel was payed by The producers.
