Star Trek Voyager & DS9: worth watching?!

Question: So, I'm running out of TV shows that I want to rent from Netflix. I'm a big fan of The Next Generation, although I don't like the original series, or Enterprise. Are Voyager and Deep Space Nine good shows, in your opinion? And which one should I rent first, or were they on TV at the same time? I have never seen a single episode of either one, but if they're not very good, I don't want to waste my time with them.

A few other shows I like: Lost, Buffy and Angel, Firefly, Tru Calling, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, The Dresden Files, Battlestar Galactica. Do you have any other suggestions, based on those?

I saw them both and have been to Trek conventions and met many of the actors. I preferred DS9 to STNG. DS9 needs to be viewed in order. The episodes are well written but much of the story line is continuous. DS9 came on during the last year of STNG. Voyager came on during the last year of DS9. Much of it's story line is also continuous and has a religious feel to it, dealing with immortal beings and Gods. Voyager didn't have the great evil aliens like the Borg for a year or two, then they added Seven of Nine, a great looking Borg. Both shows are worth watching.
Check out the Prisoner series from the 1970's and Quantum Leap.

I preferred DS9 to Voyager, but you know how Trek shows are - it's practically a religious issue. DS9 started before Voyager, but I believe Voyager started while DS9 was still running.

Based upon the shows you've mentioned, I recommend the following (some are older, but not too old):

Alias
Heroes
Farscape
Firefly
Babylon 5 (the first season is kind of slow, but it definitely picks up later. Since it's so serialized you can't skip season 1, unfortunately. But it's well worth being patient)
Supernatural
Dead Like Me
Joan of Arcadia
Wonderfalls
Prison Break
The X-Files
Northern Exposure
Dexter
Highlander
Forever Knight
Lois and Clark
Veronica Mars
V

DS9 is better than Voyager. It does the best job of all the series in exploring beings from other planets. Special attention is paid to the Klingons, the Ferengi, the Bajoran, the Cardassians, and the Dominion, but the Romulans and many others are also involved over the course of DS9's seven seasons.

It is the only Star Trek series with a true "back-story" that follows through until the final episode. While Voyager does have a back-story about "getting home", it is played out much less compelling than DS9's "Dominion War. "

Voyager's time-line takes place after DS9, so you will miss a bit of continuity if you go to VOYAGER first.

Voyager is also considered the version of Trek that is the most politically correct. Janeway surrenders the ship a few times, enjoys talking things out with her enemies and friends, and displays unique feminine sensitivities which contribute to soultions she works out for a variety of crises.
