On American Idol, how does song choice matter?!

Question: I was just wondering this because people always choose really old songs (to me, at least). And it's not like they grew up in that generation. That really good 17-year-old guy on the most current season chose a song by Elvis. If I were on that show I'd want to sing Evanescence, Gwen Stefani, or some other modern song. Is there a reason why people seem to choose "old" songs a lot?

Well last week it was 60's week, so they had to pick a stupid song from the 60's.

It matters because some people may not have much range as far as octaves go, so if they pick a song that is sung in a higher key and they can't kit the notes, the end up sounding horrible.

Because older songs are much more original than the works out today.

hm.......................um................ not sure..................um...........

Because if they stuff up not as many people would know lol j/k nah it's because they're probably better at singing it because old songs don't have all this techno sh!t and the voices aren't all sc r ewed with.

Because each week they tell them the era or genre they want them to pick a song from. I think last week they were all told to pick a song from the 60's, and they were provided with a list of songs from that era to pick from.

Then they need to make a song choice from within that genre, that works well with their own personal style. Hopefully showing off their vocal range or some other asset.

they have to sing the short songs, but yet they still dont sing the whole song. they olny sing 1 or 2 verses(depending on length) then the chorus

Because some songs have a smaller range (note wise) and some have larger... so with that, and other factors... choosing a song that fits your abilities better... will make you sound better as well.

because people need to choose songs that suite them

they get a list of songs. usually older songs create a challenge because they have to learn them. if there were a lot of newer songs on the list they would be easy because they would be played on the radio a lot. who r u talking about? i love american idol.

it's not a matter of choosing an 'old' song or a 'new' song. it's about choosing a song that compliments your voice. maybe the a lot of the contestants this season have a voice style that shows off the 'old' songs better than 'new' songs.

Maybe because they know that the judges are older than them and remember him.
ALL people that I know who are old enough to remember elvis love him. I don't really like his music though hehe ..
You're kinda right :|

well there are things you dont see that is behind the scenes they work with music directors to find there songs that fit there voice. also they want a song that everyone knows. although it is an old song you know what it is. so it can relate to the new generation as well as the old generation. They get then that works to there voice type. not something to modern that it wont appeal to an older crowd but not old enough that you dont know what it is.

i no right! i totally agree with you. the 17 year old his name is david archuleta and I LOVE HIM!!! hes so awesomee! idk if we're thinkin of the same 17 year old tho. but yea, the old songs bore me to death.

Apparently the producers of the show have a list of 50 songs the contestants can pick from and they get to choose 3 songs from the list that they think they can do and the producers get the final say on which song they sing.
But last week Garrett Haley (who got eliminated) didn't even get to pick his own song. The producers forced him to sing the song that he did and so because he didn't get to sing a song that he wanted and that might have showed his voice better, he didn't get the votes and so had to go home.
It's really unfair how they do it.

Well each week the judges choose a category of music that the contestants have to pick a song from. For instance, last week was "60's week", which is why all of the songs sounded old to you! Some weeks the category might be a particular artist, and they have to sing one of their songs, or it might be an entire genre such as country.

Each contestant chooses a song that fits into the assigned category, that they think they can make to sound like their own and that will showcase their voice.

because last week it was 60's theme so everyone had to choose a song made back in the 60's.

there song choice matters because if they pick a song that they cant sing very well then it could make or break them. everyone has a certain type of vocal range and if they chose a song that didnt match there vocal range( or theme for the week) then they could end up out of tune. it also depends on if their a soprano, alto, tenor, or bass. which is basicallythe sa thing as a vocal range. if your an alto and try to sing the soprano part they you will crack because thats a very high range for an alto, so when choosing the right song you must keep that in mind. thats basically why its important.
