Kobe did not die.
After he ran away from the car his dad chased him, caught him and threatened him with the knife to his throat. Kobe was apologizing and crying but his Dad just told him to run.
The FBI waited until the Dad called his sister and tried to trace the call but Jack interrupted and made a deal to trade the kid.
They meet and the dad shoots himself after telling them what happened to the boy.
They looked at a train yard and found the boy sleeping on a train.
I have seen scarier episodes though!
