Why are so many American Idol finalists so mediocre?!
Question: Okay, I've watched this show off and on ever since the first season. One thing has always puzzled me, though: Out of the thousands upon thousands of hopefuls who try out, why are so many of the final 24 always so mediocre? (I realize that "mediocre" is a relative term. All of the finalists are better than most everyone else on the planet.)
It seems to me that they always find just a few singers who are really, really good week after week. The rest are just interesting at best (in my opinion). I would think that out of so many auditioners there would be at least 24 people who would be "outstanding" on a week-after-week basis.
Any theories or thoughts?

I think part of it is that they try to cast for singing talent, and when the top 24 performances come along, arrangement and song choice matter a lot more - songwriters or musicians may have an advantage on those two over the singers that move up through the previous rounds.
I definately agree with you upon reading that. I really don't know why they aren't that great..maybe there just aren't THAT many gifted people on the planet!
I disagree. However there are some in the top 24 who really aren't good, the ones who made it through I think will really bring some good stuff to the table.

I agree, it does seem kinda strange. Many weeks I can think of at least 1 or 2 acquaintances who would be much more interesting and impressive than some of the contestants. Also, why does no one ever seem to learn that singing ballads is a bad idea?? Haven't any of the contestants ever watched previous seasons?

They do it for views. example, sanjaya, he sucked but people don't wanna see 24 amazing singers cuz they get bored. they need people to love and people to hate on the show, in order to create an interest
I think a lot of this has to do with poor song selection...... I think Drew and Josiah should have been selected instead of Garrett and that Berry kid who looks like Ellen Degeneres....they do nothing for me.
I personally like Michael Johns. There were a few last night who did pretty good. David Cook, the next to the last guy. I think his name was Jason, David whose last name began with A. and another David whose last name was Carrolo or something like that. My memory is terrible when it comes to names!
Well, I know one thing, they let go the best. I just heard Josiah's songs on his MySpace profile and they're AMAZING. My dad even likes them and says Josiah reminds him of John Lennon (Dad's a huge Beatles fan, who saw them live back in the day) and agrees that AI made a HUGE mistake. So what, he had a bad day, they should've still given him a chance,though, because he was still better than half the guys who made it.
Since he's not there, I like Michael, David Cook and Jason and a few others, but most of them are mediocre at best. And,honestly, I don't know why half of them are there and someone like Josiah isn't. All I can think is that after auditioning thousands of contestants, the judges get really tired and very confused :p
I think they try to stack the deck with some people who they know won't win, and they pretty much have it figured out who we will pick as top 12, even top 5.
