American Idol - Unsigned and Undiscovered.....?!

Question: What do you think of American Idol having 4 of the final 24 contestants who have had recording contracts and failed (one whose band opened for Brittany and another opened for Bryan Adams). Do you think this violates the spirit of the show? Does it make you not care or are you on the boat for second chances?

It's one thing to have a recording contract and quite another to "make it" in the music business. The recording studios will snatch up much talent but then under-utilize them or give them one shot to make it.

American Idol is a wonderful opportunity for wanna-bes of any level. It gets the participants name out there - helps create buzz. All of this helps to sell the first album or two - but after that, the person is standing on their own.

Besides, even if they don't have recording contracts, many of the contestants have had paid performances before. There are just too many variables to try and find a way through this quagmire.

It's too bad becase I really like the liked the idea of an unknown winning but with so many seasons under their belts now, that may be more difficult to find.

There are actually 5. Robbie Carrico toured with Britney Spears. David Archuleta won Star Search. Michael Johns, Carly Smithson, and Kristy Lee Cook had contracts. Although Michael Johns and Carly Smithson have been my favorites from the beginning, they will not get my vote. All of these 5 people can obviously make it on their own, therefore do not and should not be on American Idol.

It doesn't really bother me. May the best contestant win.

I think it is an amatuer singing competition and there are clearly several people who are not amatuers...

It does take away from the spirit of the show for me.

It doesn't really bother me. Chris Daughtry had unofficial CDs with his bands Absent Element and Cadence, Bo Bice had one with his band Sugar Money. It just shows that they've been trying to make it for a really long time and struck out on their luck. I'd honestly rather see one of them win than someone who never had any interest in becoming a singer and just auditioned for AI on a whim, for lack of anything better to do. I think they deserve it more because they've tried everything they could to get their big break and,for some, this could be their last chance.

I don't like the fact they allowed these people to stay, especially that one chick who had a multi-million dollar contract and didn't do well before. American Idol is supposed to be about giving someone who is just starting out a chance at stardom.

But....the exception is Michael Johns. He can stay..... :)
