How did The Stig on BBC Top Gear get his name ?!

Question: I have heard that all new boys at Jeremy Clarkson`s public school, were called `Stigs` and the name came from that. I am told that `Stig` was a name for new boys in quite a few schools.

  • I thought it was after Stig Blomqvist (or some spelling like that), a rather gung-ho Swedish rally driver who could do amazing things with a two-stroke Saab.

It is 'gits' in reverse and was a internal in the team describing the people who watch the programme. That's what their true thoughts are.

Might be true - I didn't know that.

But as no one knows who the Stig is then will we ever know the truth?
