Do the Grey's Anatomy writers have a fascination with this mental illness?!

Question: I've been watching Grey's Anatomy and in 3 or 4 random episodes they had at least one patient that ate unedible items like razors, dolls, cotton balls and money. I can't remember what that mental illness is called but....
Do the Grey's Anatomy writers have a fascination with this mental illness?

Or are they trying to tell the audience that this stuff(patients eating things that aren't food) is common in big city hospitals?

i worked for a hospital not in a large city, but a tri county, there was at least 3-5 a month pts that did this, so its more common than you think

I think they're trying to out-House "House". Either that, or they've run out of all the "normal" diseases of the week.

I think they are showing that the illness does infact exist in our society and I also think the continually do it because it makes for a good script. Most people are stunned by it, so I guess its more exciting to see than the common cold.

The disorder is called Pica Disorder and it's sadly quite common. But it's not like all people who eat non-food objects have pica.. people with anorexia eat things like cotton balls so they weigh more on scales.. kids eat crayons and often anything else they can get their hands on... *shrugs*

I think it is a combination of both. It is common and makes for more interesting TV. I watch Grey's too and it does seem like they have overdone this one a little.
