Why is MTV blamed for most negative things involving the youth?

Right on cyclone. It was just a music channel in the 80's and 90's. Older people know MTV for music video's. There has been a rise of reality shows and a decline in music videos. As it draw more youth into watching it, to get more audience, they will sometime cross over the line. And the rise of violence can use MTV for a scapegoat because of what is being shown.
Even I'm a bit anti-MTV, why? it's not about music anymore.
I was around at the beginning of MTV and it was great. Imagine, music on the telly - ALL day and ALL night long.
But that's when they played videos. Now, there's so little actual music on MTV it's more like "Empty V."

Music Television, now with very little music.
MTV was pretty cool in the beginning. They had a lot of live concert footage of rock bands. Then they started allowing rap artists in and then it was downhill from there. It became about glamorizing ghetto gods. I will classify it as the niggerdizing of America.
When MTV was first formed, it was for the sole purpose of being a music channel. They used to play music videos instead of reruns of reality shows all day. Maybe older people just remember how it started out- as a channel that played new music videos instead of repetitive shows that have nothing to do with music.
During the early hours in the morning when they actually do play music, they don't even play a decent variety. If you watch it for an hour, you're guaranteed to see the same music video at least two or three times.
As far as being blamed for youth problems, I haven't heard anything about that.

I believe that MTV is a scapegoat cultural icon. I was around for the beginning of MTV as well BTW, that is when their logo was the astronaut planting the flag on the moon, where the flag would change into all kinds of crazy colors.
MTV a music channel?
Not for a while, now MTV is more like a reality teenage channel, with Realworld, True life, My Sweet 16, Cribs, Next, and a bunch of other shows based on the lives of celebrities and young adults trying to make it in the world.
BTW, cable television drama today, is more brutal, racy and harsh than anything MTV has to offer.
I wish MTV still had music videos though.

If a generation cannot understand something they generally blame it for everything that is wrong with the world.
MTV is just the modern equivalent of videogames turning kids into zombies or watching Elvis Presley's hip thrusting being responsible for unmarried mothers.
I agree with the poeople above though MTV is getting really bad with little good music content now.
When I first began watching MTV ... they were MTV, Music Television with no commercials. These days, MTV is nothing more than a Reality Show channel that happens to play music videos when they don't have a Reality Show in a certain timeslot.
How much older are we talking? Pre-MTV generations, seniors? I was a younger kid & my siblings were teens when MTV first aired, we loved it and our parents thought it was Satan being broadcasted and beamed into our living rooms, everything bad came from MTV or it's influence, because now they didn't have to just hear the catterwalling as they called it, now they had to hear & see these appalling images of the artists that sang us into rebellious behavior and they were giving us ideas, not just any ideas but bad ideas on behavior, dress, & everything else that they didn't want their kids to be doing! Not Only all this but they were playing it 24 hrs a day, nothing but music videos and they won't get their kids out from in front of the television and may even have to buy another t.v. set because Jr. just took over the family t.v. set. But now, you must be kidding it is more annoying that anything especially since Music television should usually play music and I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a band, video or anything other than Reality shows and music news, commercials & people talking on there. Heck...I didn't know they still showed music on there I thought, MTV & VH1 had both sold out for advertising space. So I don't know if this is what you were going for but I hope this may have helped you gain some sort of answer as to why older folks don't like MTV!

I don't know how 'old' older people are to you, but when MTv first started, it played - get this - MUSIC VIDEOS! =) It was commercial-free and 24/7.
After a long week at work, we'd often come home on Friday, sack out on the couch with munchies, turn on MTv, and not move again until Sunday night.
That's when it was good!! It's all crap now, and pretty much anything BUT a Music channel - as far as I know... Sorry! =(
Do you consider 60 old? I'm not against MTV in fact were I younger I would be watching it all the time. I still find things in the charts I think are tops and even buy on line.
